Starting WLS journey as a vegan

Recommended Posts

Hey all!

New to the site, joined today. I had my first appt with the surgeon on 1/15/19.

i have a long list of things to get checked before the surgery.

I follow a lot of fb groups and IG people who have done WLS and I see the pre and post op diet of broth and Protein Shakes and Jello.< br />
Ive been vegan for 2 years- I’m wondering what you guys used in place of broth and jello? I have ordered a few kinds of Protein Powder (most are only 21g per scoop/serving as opposed to 30g per whey Protein scoop).

so I am a little concerned but hoping to find my way.

I love Wal-Mart's Vegan Protein broth, especially since my pouch , the bossy little Precious Pouch has swore off animal protein, this broth stays down and tastes very good.

There are vegan/vegetarian versions of both. On this site there is an entire section dedicated to vegan/vegetarian lifestyle as well ,you'll be ablse to find some suggestions there too.

CONGRATS 💜

For when you get to the food stage.. my son is a vegetarian, I know it is a little different than a vegan, but if you have an Aldi near you, they have a brand called earth grown.. that has a lot of vegan items.. meatless meat.. I buy a lot of it for him and i have even tried it.. very tasty.

Disclaimer: not a vegan. But I ate mostly vegan before surgery (even though I'm actually a pescatarian).

I'm 3 months post-op. Make sure to tell your hospital that you're vegan. And make sure they understand. The hospital gave me broth and Jello for every meal. They found me some vegetarian broth, but kept bringing the jello, insisting that I could eat it (even after I told them how its made).

As for my diet post-op. I've never eaten any kind of jello post-op. I did have some sugar free popcicles, but I really didn't need them. I did a lot of broth with Protein powder in the liquid phase. I highly recommend Millie's sipping broth - its vegan broth in tea bags. Really good.

pureed stage, I made a bunch of pureed Beans and lentils and froze them in 1/4c servings. And veg - mostly spinach and sweet potatoes.

I will say that I've had to eat a lot more dairy than I'd like post-op to get my protein in. I haven't thought through how I'd do it without dairy, but I bet it could be done. I do a lot of morningstar farms stuff. Check the protein content before you buy, some of their stuff has very little protein, while others are better. I still eat beans and lentils, but it takes a lot of those to get significant protein.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
