Time off... What did YOU do?

I'm just wondering about how long did everyone else take off for recovery ? I was told 1-2 days in the hospital and then about a week after before I return to work. I work in a triage unit for a hospital so I'm wondering if maybe 2 weeks would be better or overkill. I know everyone is different I'm just looking for more information.

I personally did two weeks before returning. I probably could have returned after one week but it wouldn't have been super easy. I also have a desk job, so if I had a job that required a little more movement I definitely would recommend going for the full two weeks.

Take as much time as you can afford/benefits allow. That is my advice.

Better to have extra time off and be recuperated than muddling through work miserable and fatigued.

I am a nurse and had to have six weeks off due to physical requirements before I returned back. I do not regret being able to have the time off.

I have booked 4 weeks off, and some have said that is too much, but I'm comfortable with that. I have had 3 previous surgeries, and have been a slow healer for all of them. My surgeon's office issues a work letter going out for 6 weeks, as standard. They say I can call and get a letter saying I am fit to return if I want to go back before that.

I run a supervised visitation centre for domestic abusers to have court ordered visits with their kids. I can't leave the room, they have to be supervised at all times - so if I was ill, nauseous, had diarrhoea or dumping, it would be bad. Also, the nearest bathroom is 2 floors away.

I'd rather be home as I recover and get through those first weeks of fatigue and weirdness, and get used to my new body and new limitations.

I agree with @KimTriesRNY to take as much time as you are able to take.

I took two weeks, then teleworked another week. I really wanted to be on at least soft foods when I went back to work. That 3rd week, I was still super tired (I only made it partial days the first two teleowork days) - and I was working from home at a desk job, not working on my feet all day.

I took two weeks off and worked remotely from home for a 3rd week. I definitely needed it and would have taken another week if I could have. I truly think my pain and discomfort came more from my hiatal hernia repair than my bypass. I’m 5.5 weeks post op and back to work like nothing ever happened!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
