Mouth Noises

Recommended Posts

This has nothing to do with weight loss or surgery or anything. I'm self diagnosing here... I'm pretty sure I have something called Misophonia, which, according to WebMD is a "disorder in which certain sounds trigger emotional or physiological responses that some might perceive as unreasonable give the circumstance". Certain noises DRIVE ME NUTS! I can't stand mouth noises in particular. Mouth noises are lip smacking, throat clearing, loud chewing, etc...... It's the worst!!!! Of course, a coworker does all of these things, so I feel insane right now! UGH!!! I wish I could just not let it bother me, but that's not how this works.

I'm the same way. I have to keep some background noise going on whenever possible.

Hehe. I thought I was the only one irritated by this.

I also get irritated by hearing other people breathe. Why are you breathing so loud! Breathe quietly darn it!

Or just STOP! 😂

Totally Understand! I too put background music on when people make so much noise especially when i am trying to focus on work. I do ask myself.. Is that really necessary! When i am meaning to say it to them. I find it much more polite to ask it to myself quietly LOL

I also genuinely believe I have misophonia specific to mouth sounds, including throat clearing. People love to joke about it (myself included) but it actually sucks. I hate myself for sometimes hating members of my own family for doing totally normal things like chewing their food!

In the last several years I've noticed that this extends to utensil sounds during eating- clanking spoons in bowls, specifically.

Last time I was at the movies, the woman next to me was dipping her fingers in the nacho cheese and sucking it off. It was the loudest most foul noise I had ever heard. I looked right at her, just staring at her. Finally she stopped

It seems in this hyper-aroused world persons increasing struggle with both filtering stimuli and social norms. Was at a graduation where nachos and chili dogs were sold... for the audience. A person completes medical school and graduates and the audience can not go 2 hours without food and electronics??!! Too much stimulation leads to an over active nervous system.

OMG! I thought I was the only one with this problem. I was also getting irritated with my coworkers during lunch cause of chewing noises. If im done eating i could hear their chewing. Ugh! I feel anger..i feel my blood boil..it really scares me.I dont know why!? At home with my family before surgery I would tell them to eat then I would sit by myself to eat or I would eat at the same time, like a race and make sure I ate at the same pace so that I don't hear them chew. It's terrible, frustrates me. Now I have the excuse that because I had surgery I always eat at my own little table with my own food, at work I eat in my office not in the lounge anymore. So it has helped. But when this happens I have to remind myself that I'm the one with this problem before I tell anybody off because i have told people things then regret it. [emoji57] [emoji16]

Makes you feel like you're in the middle of barn animals all loudly chewing their cud.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
