4.5 years, water still an issue!

Recommended Posts

Sadly, even 4.5 years post op I am STILL unable to stomach drinking plain H2O.

This is an issue for many post op. I'm using sugar free Powerade, unsweet tea, 'stir ins', any form of lemon/lime I can find, and a few other options.

Anyone else here affected?

I haven't even tried plain Water yet, six weeks post-op. I'm doing Gatorade Zero (no sugar), unsweet teas, and flavored mix-ins. I figured as long as it's liquid it's keeping me hydrated.

Yeah, I actually just posted that in another thread, that plain Water makes me physically ill, and I want to vomit shortly after drinking it. It doesn't happen though if I flavor it with something.

I am in between. Some rare times it is what I want but other moments I add a splash of juice or anything!

I drink Powerade zero almost exclusively. And a still Water with a hint of fruit flavor (unsweetened) called "Hint", go figure. Anyway, if I try to drink seltzer, I can't get through a can, but I can get through 16 oz. of Hint and 32 of Powerade. That's 48. Then I try to drink 8oz. of warm water before bed, because I can't stomach cold water (That's 56 total) I was once told if 50 is the best I can do, it's good enough. It worked when I was initially losing, so losing some of these excess pounds should happen again with 56. (One hopes!)

I have used sugar free mix in to flavor Water and have worked up to adding one mix in 32 oz of water. That way the water is flavored but not over sweet. I also drink power aide zero diluted 50/50 with water. I don’t drink carbonated beverages because the bubbles take up space and I end up burping a lot. When drinking fluids, I can take in 5-7 swallows at a time and limit fluids with meals since I can only hold 1/2 cup at a meal (so I usually sip once or twice with a meal)

As for amount every day, I get around 64 oz a day. I am coming on my 6th year post sleeve and I have never been able to get 100 oz a day.

I'm in the same boat and also drink mostly Powerade zero these days. I was talking to my nutritionist and she said this is pretty common. I noticed that with regular Water and other drinks they tend to sit in my stomach or make it clench while other stuff I can almost drink freely (or at least in frequent biggish sips). Her theory is it is the PH of what you're drinking and that stuff with a slightly more acidic PH goes down easier. I've tested this a little and very often drink about 4 oz of diet cranberry with 16 oz of water (in a powerade bottle). This until I got lazy a month or two ago was 99% of what I drank and it goes down easy. Lemon and water is ok depending on the amount of lemon. Kind of interesting.... temperature also effects me, cold stuff isn't good and warm stuff is super easy so light hot cocoa very diluted is a go to if I'm having trouble

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
