Hi everyone,

I am right around six weeks out, and my scale tells me I am down about 22 lbs - I started out at 252, and am now down to 230.

My problem is, I am so unhappy with this, I feel like it is not very good progress at all. Am I being too hard on myself, or should I be losing more weight?

Any advice is much appreciated!

22/6=3.67lbs per week. The average weight loss is about 2-4lbs per week with the most being lost usually in the first 2 months. I'd say you were on target for being a "little on the high end of average." There is also a well-known 3 week stall period in there and some of us also had a 6 week stall as well. Hang in there. Work the plan. In 6 months you won't recognize yourself...Raymond.

Nothing happens overnight. Be good to yourself. It's not how fast, it's the fact you are losing weight. Give yourself credit for the work you are putting into this. We lose weight at different rates. Does not matter if it's fast or slow. It's all the same goal to get healthy.

When was the last time you lost 22 pounds in six weeks?

I had RNY gastric bypass and after surgery my weight dropped like a lead balloon. At around 7 months I transitioned to the Maintenance phase. Sleeve patients lose weight at a much slower pace. They encounter many stalls along the way. They can achieve almost the same weight loss as gastric bypass patients. Many do not transition to the Maintenance phase for two years.

I went to my one month check up last week. They told me to increase my calories by at least 200. I did and have lost 5 pounds in 4 days. I was eating under 800, now I try to get in right under 1000.

@anl1990 Don't let the above post get you down.

I happen to disagree with it. I'm a sleeve. got to goal in "six months" transitioned to maintaining in six months. I'm maintaining four 1/2 years out. I would have been fine if it took me a year or more. I'm also not the only sleeve that contradicts @James Marusek opinion.

What do all surgery types have in common?

Does not matter what type of bariatric surgery you have. We all lose at different rates. Anyone of us can experience weight gain. Surgery success depends on following plan and changing old behaviors.

That's over 3 pounds per week. That's GREAT! Take it easy on yourself, it's not all gonna come off overnight. I'm at 6 weeks post-op and have lost 19 pounds and I'm happy because I know it's going to be a consistent couple of pounds a week for the next 9-12 months and I'll eventually reach goal weight.

Thank you for your opinions, everyone! You have made me feel a lot better lol. :)

I think the reason I am so down on myself is because my husband thinks I am not losing like I should be. He had his surgery a week before me, and is (I feel like) losing more than me. So I guess the comments made me feel like a failure. But it is nice to know I am right where I should be! :)

But pounds aren't the same as percentages. People of higher weights are going to lose more pounds, but the same percentage as a person of lower weight. Also, each person is different.

Rule of thumb: 33% of excess weight loss at 3 months, 50% of excess weight loss at 6 months, 70% of excess weight loss at 12 months

Wow, Sorry to hear about your husbands comments.

Try not to compare your weight loss with anyone in real life or the stats on this site. It will make you crazy. This WLS experience will be unique to you. Concentrate on working your program. You are more than the statistics.

I have been trying to just focus on the positives, but comments get to me easily. You know? I am so proud of him and how far he has come already, and I guess I don't feel it is mutual. Oh well lol I am digressing.

And remember men lose faster than we do, that's a known fact. Its inbred in us not to drop a whole weight, we might be incubating a new generation, your body wants to make sure you're fit to nurture. Its just bad when your family is complete, you know you're obese, and you desperately are trying, but you fight an uphill battle.

You are being too hard on yourself. Just hanging out on these boards and others for the last few years, I would say most people lose somewhere in the 15-25 lb range the first month - and then it'll really slow down from then on. I know you'll find people who lose 30 lbs the first month, but I think they're more the exception.

I lost 16 lbs the first month, so I lost at about the same rate as you are. Check my stats - I ended up losing over 200 lbs and all of my excess weight. If you stick to your program, the weight will come off - whether fast or slow. Your commitment to your plan will have a MUCH greater effect on your ultimate success than your rate of weight loss.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
