Gas Pains After Surgery

Recommended Posts

I have seen a number of comments here about gas pains after surgery, and I'm wondering exactly what that means. Is this the gas that was pumped into the abdomen during surgery? Is it released via good old-fashioned flatulence or some other way? (I'm having bypass on February 25.)

Yes, they pump your abdomen full of gas during the operation and that causes discomfort. The gas eventually works its way into your colon and out the usual exit.

its released in one of two ways LOL.. from above or below!!!.. i was lucky and it came out from above.. but man there was a burp with every sip. I did not have the pains, just the gas. I think it took almost 2 weeks to be completely gone.

It's gas that they pump into the abdominal cavity during surgery, to help lift the diaphragm away from your stomach so that they can see better. Mine manifested especially around my shoulders and my chest area though it went away after a couple of days or so.

I do have some gas like pains that have come back, but I am not certain whether or not they are related directly to the gas that was pumped into my stomach during the surgery.

I had surgery in 2013. Flatulent is a constant problem ever since. Surgeon said I’d probably have to live with it. Good luck.

Thanks everyone for the explanations. This gives me a much better idea of what to expect. Sounds fun!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
