Sneezing and Other Weird Signs Your Pouch is Full

Recommended Posts

So I read elsewhere that a lot of people are reporting that they start sneezing when their pouch is full or their eyes/nose start running. That's so weird! Anyone here experience that sort of thing too? I know there's hiccuping and burping, but sneezing seems like such a strangely attached reaction to a full pouch :D

So funny! I didn't know this til my nutrition class pre-op when they told us to look for cues. My daughter is only 20 and hasn't had the surgery but ever since she was small her nose runs after eating a meal and she has to blow her nose. I swear it's because she is full! I never knew.

My surgeon explained that during the surgery, the Vagus Nerve is cut and that's what causes the runny noses response when the pouch is full. Kind of interesting and tons of stuff on the interwebs about it.

Yep! I get a runny nose as I eat and if I've filled my pouch/sleeve, I do what I call "machine-gun sneezing" where I just sneeze over and over again. We're talking like 10 or 15 times in a row!

I generally try to avoid that, so I stop before I get to that point. It's one thing to sneeze like typhoid Mary in private, but you get some strange looks in the office or in a restaurant.

HAH! That's insane! My work "brothers" will be all over this. My team is me and 3 other guys - we're like family :P They call me rapid-fire so I sneeze enough as it is....I can already hear the new nicknames flowing in! :D I wonder if anyone has ever sneezed themselves to death :1421_nose_tone2:

I did sneeze in the beginning when I started on puree but it did not last long, now I only burp when I'm full which I never did before surgery, but I'm so ok with that...thankful for the sign and restriction YES!!

I get hiccups very often now which was never a thing pre-surgery. Its definitely associated with eating and drinking but not necessarily a "you had enough" sign. I think it just has to do with the new layout of the stomach and the way air gets trapped/moves throughout.

Having to blow your nose is a definite sign you are full

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
