I'm getting RE-SLEEVED! Anyone else done this yet?

Recommended Posts

I was originally sleeved in 2013 and was approved through a new insurance company to be sleeved AGAIN this year!

Sadly my sleeve failed due to several major life occurrences and it stretched back out to the point that I've gained back half of the 100 pounds I had originally lost post op. Maybe I failed my sleeve, not the other way around but I'm not here to be judged. My dad died, I got divorced (and it was UGLY), fought for custody of my son (and won!), moved 3 times and then finally bought a house, was diagnosed with Bell's Palsy, got remarried and I had a heart attack all in the past 5 years!!!

That being said, I'm ready to get resleeved but I've never met anyone who has done this. ANYONE???????

My only issue is the weight gain, I don't have GERD or any reflux issues or a hernia. I'm just fat again and can't lose it back.

Curious, how much is the sleeve stretched? What test did you have to determine this? I feel like I don’t have much restriction to begin with so I’m terrified of this happening.

Hi there,

Yes you have been through a lot! I hope things has gotten better for you. I've never heard of anyone getting resleeved but it's great if the doctors can do that especially if your stomach has stretched back. When are you having surgery?

You might be better off revising to Bypass. That's what I have and I love it. There are three other people in my life that are up to ten + years out with RNY and wouldn't change a thing. Good luck!

No judgement here. I'm sorry to hear about all your struggles.

I agree with @Ed_NW. You may want to look at all the other types of bariatric surgery options. Talk it over with your surgeon. Do what's best for you and your health.

Usually, people get resleeved when there is an issue with the way the first procedure was performed. Even if a sleeve stretches out, the benefits from a second sleeve operation aren't that signficant (not enough weight loss to justify the procedure). I would agree with the other who suggested considering other procedures. A RNY is one option, but I think the better option for someone that already has a sleeve is the SIPS procedure (which is a modified duodenal switch). It's a lot more effective than a resleeve (unless your sleeve wasn't done right in the first place) and it's a much easier recovery from what I have read--your stomach isn't involved do you don't have the same issues with pre-op and post-op dieting etc.

how did the re-sleeving go?

This is interesting. I'm surprised that you weren't talked into a RNY conversion. I thought that the sleeve stretching was a myth as per Dr. Matthew Weiner's youtube channel, but apparently not as it happened to you. I would be interested to hear an update. I hope that surgery went smoothly and that it works famously this time around!

I did a barium swallow to determine if my pouch had stretched out or not and it showed Yes! The amount of scar tissue created after sleeve #2 makes it impossible to stretch out again, according to my dr.

Move never heard of this Dr. Wiener but I’ll look it up.

My surgery is scheduled for April 3!!!

In the normal situation, there isn't significant stretch, maybe to double its original post surgical capacity (check it by seeing how much steak or chicken you can eat at a sitting, with nothing else along with it), but there can be more if the sleeve wasn't properly done in the first place (too much of the stretchy fundus left behind, typically at the top or bottom of the sleeve.)

I have seen a few resleeves done, though it was usually done as part of a conversion to the duodenal switch (which adds a malabsorptive component) and the original sleeve was poorly made.

I personally would not get sleeved again, especially if you have not been successful with the first one. Looking into another option like others have said. I would go with Bypass and I wish I had done Bypass the first time around. Having said that, if you do not address the issues with your eating it really will not matter what surgery you have if you dont change the mental issues related to eating. Where ever you go, there you are.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
