How long did it take you to get your surgeries?

Recommended Posts

I
I'm noticing alot of folks with Cigna
My first Dr appt was Jan 17 th I haven't had surgery yet but my insurance dies NOT require supervised weigh ins so it's looking like my surgery will be late March early April. Everything will be submitted to insurance for approval on March 7th and as soon as we get approval (my insurance is pretty quick) I'll pick a surgery date and begin my pre-op diet. I have United healthcare Medicare advantage plan.

That's pretty quick , most provinces seem to take about 2 years, did you Private Pay? At any rate, congratulations and I hope everything goes well for you÷

It's more close to 10 months because I got my surgery date at 9 months in, but I haven't had my surgery yet and I didn't factor that in. Also after one appointment I was confused about whether they were calling me or I was supposed to stop on my way out to make another appointment, so I called the next day. I was told on the phone it would be about 3 weeks and they would call me, and then she put me through to an answering machine and told me to leave my name to verify I was on the list or something along those lines. They called me back that day and booked an appointment for the following week. I think I just got lucky.

I didn't private pay. I also didn't have to do a sleep clinic and I only had to see each of the specialists one time.

Thanks I hope it all goes well too, it's getting closer and I am getting nervous and excited.

It would have taken me 6 months but instead it was a 10 month process for me because I didn’t pass my psychological evaluation. I had to to go added therapy. Truth be told I was not ready and they definitely picked up on that. At the time I was MAJORLY disappointed but now I’m very great full for that extra time it took for me to get to know myself and why I overeat. For anyone else out there struggling with depression or understanding their unhealthy eating habits please try to listen to The Weight Lose Surgery Podcast by Reager Cortelle It helped me immensely. It helped me much more then therapy ever did.

I will definitely give it a listen!

I started the process in December 2016 and had surgery October 2018. I work for the state of West Virginia and our insurance required a 12 month medically supervised diet and 10% of your original weight lost. Took me more like 20 months to lose it. Once that was done, the pre-auth, denial, appeal, approval, labs, psych eval, nutrition classes took about three months all together. So if you don't count my diet period, only a few months. Hope yours goes fast! Mine was so drawn out that I had surgeons change in the practice I was going to, lol!

Wow! Considering that obesity is classified as a disease it's almost appalling they would make you go through that to save your life. It's almost like they're saying "prove to us your life is worth saving"

August 15 2015- September 5 2018, maybe Karma wanted to make sure my Life at My Age was worth saving also. But finally I received mine, from a better kinder more professional and I believe smarter Surgeon so that part did end well. The fact my road has gotten bumpier is in no way His Fault or that of the Facility, it's just my healing path is atypical but it's still going to end up GOOD, like the 60s song IT'S JUST A MATTER OF TIME.😛👣😛👣

My first appointment was June 4th and I had surgery November 1. I could have had it beginning of October, but I had work obligations. I have Highmark BCBS.

My family physician sent in a referral in 2011. In 2012 I got a letter saying that I had been approved, and that wait times were long so I should just be patient and wait.
I actually forgot I had been referred, so much time passed (or I thought they had decided not to give me the surgery) until November of 2018 when I received a letter saying that I was scheduled for a seminar on Jan 22nd.
At the seminar they said to start the pre-op diet (2 weeks full liquids, the rest of the time 900 - 1200 calories/day) because they were scheduling people for their consultation in March and wanted us to have lost 10-20 lbs by then.

So... 8 years? But there are only 2 doctors in my area who perform the surgery and there's a 1500-person waiting list (this is through public health. I'm sure if I were to pay for the surgery it would go much more quickly).

I started in 2017 feb. I didn't realize nurse practitioners visits did not count. Had to restart, missed a session and restart. I was also in the mode that I could do it myself. Then really 7 consecutive visits, card eval(stress test), 14 day cpap machine compliance, primary doc approval. 3 different records from 3 years that showed obesity. Insurance approval came back within 4 days. I have BCBS of AL.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
