When Can I Travel After Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Recommended Posts

I'm having bypass surgery on February 13 and would like to take a 700 mile trip by car or air to see family (domestic, not international travel) to visit a college campus with my son and daughter (and husband) 3-4 weeks after gastric bypass. I expect to feel tired, but I'm wondering how I will feel physically in terms of internal pain, nausea, etc. that far out after surgery. I am not worried about managing my diet too much, mostly concerned if I will actually feel healthy enough to make the trip. What say ye?

I'm a week post-op sleeve and feel like I would be ready to travel after another week. Honestly, I could probably do it now. I have a little bit of internal pain, but not much—I only took pain meds the first few days.

I've been wondering about this too. My brother is getting married on the other side of the country two months after my surgery.

I would break it down to segments on that long a trip. Get out, walk and take bathroom breaks often. Take plenty of fluids along so you don't get dehydrated. And remember you may still tire out quicker than you used to.

Thank you. We decided to fly to reduce travel time. We will be seeing a lot of family so I'll get my first experiences where social events involve a lot of food. This will be tough! I suppose I'm most worried about possible having post-op complications while away from home. I suppose the good news is that if I can do it, I'll feel more "normal" and back into the swing of things. I hope at least!

I had my sleeve done on 1/10 and flew on 1/16 with no problems. I made sure to bring Protein Drinks and what not so I was prepared. I honestly felt great and had no issues. You should be fine - good luck!

Thank you for this encouraging news! I was worried, but am feeling like as long as I prepare for the food situation with family and friends once we arrive, I should be OK!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
