KelseySig 0 Posted January 11, 2019 I’ve been approved for surgery but I have a question. How is it determined which surgery you get? The emails I’ve received have said that I would be getting the sleeve, but I was wondering about getting the mini gastric bypass because I have pretty bad reflux and take daily medication for it. From the research I’ve done the mini gastric bypass is better for people who have reflux.
elcee 3,341 Posted January 12, 2019 From what I have read the mini bypass also has an increased risk of reflux. RNY is generally regarded as the best option for reflux although it's still not 100% 1 Frustr8 reacted to this
KimTriesRNY 1,853 Posted January 12, 2019 I determined which surgery I received after doing my research and discussing with the surgeon what my goals are and what my history is.

Same here. Make an appointment to follow up with your surgeon to determine TOGETHER which surgery you will get. I changed my mind from sleeve to RNY between my first appointment and when I was approved for surgery, just had to make sure to advocate for myself and communicate! Maybe they’ll have some good reasons for keeping you with sleeve, but you want to make sure you’re fully in the know and empowered with what surgery you’re getting and why. 1 Frustr8 reacted to this

You should along with your surgeon be able to make a choice that best suits your medical needs. I had a class that I had to attend to start things off that gave me two options, sleeve or gastric bypass. The surgeon spoke to the class with illustrations on a projector and took questions about both procedures. I then went home and started a 6 month diet that was laid out in detail by a nutritionist. During the 6 months before my face to face with the surgeon, I had lots of time to think about the pros and cons of both surgeries. During the 6 month diet, I would become dead set on the sleeve then read or hear something that changed my mind and I would start feeling like the bypass was the best choice. It kept going like that for about 2 or 3 months until I watched so many YouTube videos and read so many articles and forums that I decided on the bypass. Whatever you do, make sure you go into this educated and you are not pushed into making a decision based only on what one doctor says. I don't know if it will happen but I would like to go the rest of my life without another major surgery. I was determined to get this right the first time. Take it slow, do your homework and make sure you are putting your trust in a reputable center of excellence. 3 KimTriesRNY, Frustr8 and laura071693 reacted to this
MarinaGirl 609 Posted January 16, 2019 VSG is contraindicated in patients with pre-existing GERD. MGB does a good job at helping resolve acid reflux; however, it does put some patients at increased risk for bile reflux. This is what happened to me. I had severe acid reflux prior to MGB surgery in Mexico. The acid reflux resolved post-op, which was confirmed with an EGD endoscopy, but now I suffer from bile reflux. If I had to do it all over again, my original bariatric surgery would be RNY, not MGB.
