Flying after sleeve...what’s allowed on the plane?

Recommended Posts

Hello. I’m traveling from NY to Orlando in February-wondering if I’m allowed to bring crystal lite in my bag? What about Water bottles? I will check out the airline website to see what’s allowed but wondering if you all have any tips for travel. It’s not a long flight for me but I want to have access to water and can’t drink without the crystal lite. Any other travel tips? I’ll be seven months post op at travel time.

Yes you can bring crystal light packs but no waters(unless frozen solid)through security. Doesn’t matter what airline it is. Snacks are absolutely ok.

The info above is not totally correct.

You can carry bottle Water on the plane, but it has to be purchased after your security checkpoint. You can try to bring it from home, they will find it and riffle thru your bag until they find it, and toss it in the trash bin.

Heads up- airport water will probably cost double what it does at any store. That’s how they get ya. Lol.

Bring an empty water bottle (or dump it out in the bathroom before security) and some of the individual packets of Crystal Lite. When you're on the other side of security, tip the Crystal Lite into your Water bottle and fill at a water fountain. That's what I do, I carry about six of those packets with me for any trip.

Based on what I've seen from other frequent flyers, one thing that will surprise you is how LITTLE you need to eat on the plane now. I always, ALWAYS over-purchase in a panic in the airport (protein bar, drinkable yogurt, nuts, spare water) and then end up carrying it around with me the rest of the trip. It's also annoying because some airports now require you to pull Snacks out of your bag during screening (they won't tell me why). More and more I've found myself just doing the water bottle/Crystal Lite and a small bag of cashews or something. If I'm on Alaska Air, I'll buy one of their in-flight cheese plates.

If you're seven months out, there's little you need to worry about after landing. Before four months out things get sticky and I advise that people check a bag with things in it like Protein Shakes and Jerky and other stage-appropriate foods. But after four months you can pretty much source anything you need onsite.

Yeah, powdered Crystal Light can go through the checkpoint, and then you can mix it with tap Water from a fountain (more and more airports seem to have those water fountains that dispense water vertically into water bottles).

I don't know that I've been on a flight post-surgery that had a full meal service, although I seem to recall being able to polish off a box of cheese and crackers for sale on American about two months post-surgery.

Of all the places I've tried to find post-surgery-appropriate food, airports are probably the most challenging.

Start practicing. It's TSA dependant. If they don't allow you to bring it through unchecked you'll have to throw it away. Other options is find something commercially available like Vitamin water zero, Snapple diet that you can tolerate, it'll likely be in the airport stores. Or drink plain water.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
