Anyone else's surgeon say no preop diet?

Recommended Posts

I went to the Nut. today and she said that the surgeon doesn't have people with a BMI below 43 on a preop diet. She said they are not concerned re. an enlarged liver for lower BMIs.

I was surprised by that.

I am thinking I may not cut down calories but I will try to be low sugar at least a few days before surgery to shrink the liver a bit.

Most certainly - many surgeons don't bother with pre-op diets (other than the normal day or evening before surgery thing); our doc doesn't do them for any BMI level, while others like yours varies it by BMI. One surgeon I know quite specifically doesn't want his patients fasting for weeks before surgery, as he wants them as strong and healthy as possible going into surgery.

Cutting down on the calories may not be needed, but it isn't a bad idea to get used to Protein Drinks as they are one of the early post-op staples, and just generally work on a long term healthy post-op diet that you can sustain.

Good luck on this new venture!

Pre-op diets vary surgeon to surgeon. My surgeon has two pre-op diets, determined by BMI: BMI below 50 is 2 meals, 2 Protein Shakes and BMI above 50 is just Protein shakes.

I do not have a pre-op diet other than liquids the day before the surgery.

My surgeon had said if my BMI were higher, then yes, he would consider it.

@2Bsmaller18

no pre-op for me.

Double edged sword. Good or bad? i read on the board about the "horrible" pre-op,

i was happy my doc said he didn't require pre-op diet. Woo Hoo!

But.... this gave me "permission" not to try and lose wt before surgery. Instead, I

went the funeral route and gained 5 lbs.!! Even though i/you didn't have a pre-op diet,

i would drink Protein Shakes, low cal - deal with your new Water situation. try and loose

some weight pre-op . Do as i say, not as i do!!

good luck

kathy

The surgeon I'm going with only requires a low card, healthy diet. No liquid diet required - Thankfully!

My doctor didn’t require any pre-op diet. Just fast the night before the surgery, I have healed super fast. Not sure if it can be attributed to that. Also my surgery was 12/26 so I was able to fully enjoy the holiday feasts

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
