Here was my pre-op diet starting 12-days before surgery:

The patient may have one Protein shake for Breakfast and one Protein Shake for lunch. At dinner, the patient may consume one Lean Cuisine.

Protein Shake = 1 scoop Iso-Pure Protein powder with up to 2 cups of skim milk.

1. No alcohol for two weeks prior to the surgery.

2. One Chromium Picolinate 400 mcg per day can be taken for fat-burning purposes.

3. One Metamucil capsule can be taken at 10:00 am and one at 3:00 pm for hunger pangs. Drink with a lot of Water.

4. 1-2 diet drinks a day are allowed, but not to be taken to excess.

5. A green salad (no colors other than green!!) may be consumed. A zero to five calorie dressing may be used, but not to excess. (Example: Wish Bone salad Spritzer)

I never did the Optifast drinks. I was on "All the Whey" powdered mix for 2 meals per day and a small sensible meal for lunch/dinner. Once that powder was gone, I switched to Walmart whey Protein. The choclate is good when mixed with skim milk. I still drink them.

You will have some hunger when on the liquid diet. Its such a big change from our way of eating that the mind and stomach dont like it. Be sure to not drink while eating, 1/2 hr before and 1 hr after. It will help to practice this for when you are banded. Now, and for a month or so after surgery, is the time your willpower will be tested.

I was on the Optifast diet for 14 weeks. I had 5 shakes a day spaced 3 hours apart. I never had a bite of food the entire time and found it very easy to do. Eating every 3 hours keeps you from being hungry. The other secret was to have at least 64 ounces of Water a day. Try not to drink 30 minutes before and after you have the shake. You will stay full longer.

Optifast is a dietary liquid administered by a medical professional. I attended a weight loss management program at a local hospital.

you might try Unjury Protein Powder. i love it and it's not nasty at all. i do have to use a hand blender to get it really well mixed. the chocolate with calorie counter milk is good, and strawberry sorbet mixed with Water and crytal light lemonade tastes like a strawberry lemonade.

I know for me the liquid diet has been one of the most challenging sacrifices, the before diet was ok, but the after it's been very hard because of all the holiday cooking :speechles first Thanksgiving and soon Christmas, but nice to know I'm not the only one going thru this.:faint:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
