Travelling and pre-op liquid diet???

Recommended Posts

Ok, I've been working on this since June....and FINALLY I have a date... Dec. 18th. Woohooo!!! However, I am supposed to travel to Chicago on a business trip in the middle of my pre-op liquid diet. Do I go or not go!? Any suggestions? I don't want this to hold me back, but there is a Christmas dinner involved.. I obviously won't be able to eat it. I'm not sure what to do.?!!? My husband said we should cancel, b/c he didn't think he could eat all those goodies in front of me, bless his heart... But we were looking so forward to this trip for months. I'm afraid I'll look out of place in front of all my peers. Any Advice!? :faint:

I'm getting my band on the 19th. I'm going home for Christmas and am not telling my family about the surgery. I told my mom months ago and she went hsyterical with worry. She's almost 70 so I don't want to worry her so I told her I changed my mind. Suggestions on how I'm going to hide the fact that I did it if I'm on mushies until New Years?????

Why don't you talk to your doctor about whether you can have 1 night off since it is only your pre-op diet.. no harm in checking.

Will she be as upset if you tell her after it's over?... she'll know that you are ok and there's nothing to worry about by then.

Aubrie, The 19th is very close to Christmas. It's going to be very difficult to hide it especially with your mother, what if you're still feeling a little pain - and you'll be on liquids too. I'm sorry but moms know it when there's something wrong or something you're not telling with daughters. I think it's best you tell your mom when you get there, say you decided to do it and you're fine, it's done, maybe you can explain to her how it works to help you so you can live a healthy and longer life. Good luck.

and just the smells from all the restaurants at every corner drove me nuts during my pre-op. But i was really determined to get this surgery, so I didnt cheat. If you do decide to come to the city, just stay busy!!!!

I almost started using that, but it was pointed out to me that the FDA does not approve it. Its a herb, and they don't have to test it. My friend scared me into not using it, though I hear it works. Wish I could say either way.

I use stevia every day. It's expensive but well worth it. It takes great in everything like tea, cottage cheese, yogurt etc. and since it's concentrated I only use a very little amount. I have never cooked with it though. I've never heard anything negative about it. It's much healthier than Splenda and all other sugar substitutes.

Hi Stevie. Be careful with supplements. My Hospital (harford) gave out a brochure about not using any herbal supplements 2 weeks befoe surgery. I think it has something to do with anesthia....anybody know?

I travelled during my pre-op diet with a colleague who didn't know I was having surgery. I was the driver, so when we landed he wanted to go to lunch. I suggested something fast and when we got to Subway, I told him, "I think I'll pass, I have some Protein powder and will have a shake instead". Later for dinner, (I was allowed to eat a light dinner) I ordered a salad and he followed suit.

Just go. You can do it!

Thank you for letting me know Bob. I will make sure I don't use any herbal supplements for at least 2 wks prior and I will also run it by my doctor. I have the app't Dec. 3rd to finalize the surgery, I would never have thought to ask if it wasn't brought up. Thanks again.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
