When can we eat salad again?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on 11/29/18. I looked through the food Phase 1, 2 & 3 guide the surgeon's office gave me but it says nothing about when we could start eating salads or raw veggies again. I remember the nutritionist saying all my veggies had to be steamed or cooked till soft, but for how long? I really want a salad with grilled chicken or shrimp.

It's best to check with your team for their timeline but just for a frame of reference, I had my bypass in Aug. Started trying raw veggies in Oct-major fail! Tried again in Nov, some luck with iceberg lettuce salads. Carrots still very bad!! December I have had better luck with raw celery and salad greens although salad tends to be a slider food for me, just a vehicle for dressing, yikes! Carrots, still not great. Now in 2019, I'm turning over a new leaf-screw carrots! Eating Protein with shredded lettuce garnishes is working for now.

Are you not allowed dressing on your plan? Mine says fat-free Salad Dressing is fine. I also make a good dressing with spicy brown mustard, stevia and Water. It's runny but it tastes good, like honey mustard dressing.

It depends on your plan, but mine allowed everything after 6 weeks post op. I had no issues with raw veggies, but I have an Iron sleeve that has had almost no issues with anything so YMMV

I am allowed dressing and usually make my own but I find I'm really interested in salad with cheese and ranch dressing but not so interested in salad with a light vinaigrette. So, I figured out it's not necessarily about the "salad" for me. I make healthier choices when I eat cooked veggies. But salad is a really nice change of pace. I was super-excited when I finally got to eat it!

I had my sleeve Nov 5, I was craving salads too. I eat a salad with my Protein whenever I can. I have had butter lettuce, romaine, arugula and spinach. I cut the skins and seeds off my tomatoes and cucumbers.

Every program is so different. I can't have any raw veggies for four full months. Can't wait to have a tiny little salad lol

Try a cucumber(English-less gas) w chicken breast and a little bit of ranch. So good!! I put a small amount of ranch on the side and dip sometimes...sometimes not. Good w or without

I have some Happy News for you.
chocolate comes from Cocao which is a plant. Therefore chocolate must be a salad itself. LOL

I was told six weeks out before trying raw veggies including salad. Even then, apparently, our systems aren't always ready. I'm almost at 4 weeks and still not getting a lot of veggies or fruit in because the Protein takes up all the room. I would love to just eat the veggies and not have to have protein. Oh well, life is different for me today.

I have had small amounts of salad but since I need to get my Protein it never amounts to much lettuce. I made a small Cobb type salad with ham or turkey, cheese and either lettuce or spinach. I weigh out my protein so I make sure I am getting enough. If I go out to dinner with my family I will usually take a few bites from my husbands salad.

I was never told not to, but I will say that even more than a year out certain raw veggies are really uncomfortable for me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
