Six months post-op+ : The Sophomores Thread

So I got a question for you all: the 60% average of excess weight that most patients lose in the first year, how do you determine what is 'excess'? Are we suppose to be using the BMI scale which for me is max 164 lbs, or one of the ideal weight scales, which is 141-145 lbs. ??

I’ve always wondered this too. My team has never set a goal for me or given me an amount they expect me to lose.

Can't Math...

jk jk

you'll get all sorts of varying answers on this even between doctors. What does your Team go by? What is your end goal calculated by (BMI or weight)? Where would you physically be comfortable?

Anyone have walking/running sneaker recommendations?

Let's be honest here, if i own them ... they are just for show πŸ˜–πŸ˜“πŸ˜πŸ˜

I can vouch that these:

1. Make me feel sporty, even if I'm just walking to 7-11 for a taquito

2. Are Philadelphia Flyer colors, cause coordination is important

3. Have walked a 5K (and only stopping for a photo op!) without blisters

4. Let's be honest, most importantly, are cute af!

Here they are ... in action!

Ok, let's all geek out! :)

So it's not an arbitrary calculation. It's based on some archaic insurance charts that the AMA and ASMBS still use to this day. This chart defines the "IDEAL" weight as placed against height.

IDEAL Weight for a Woman is defined as: 100lbs for the first 5 feet; 5lbs for every inch over 5 feet. (i.e. A 5'4" woman would have an IDEAL weight of 120lbs.)

So the ASMBS and your surgeon all know this is a bullshit chart based on the average size of people from the 50's. And most modern day people have more muscle, bones, and fat than the average size person in the 50's when women's waists were 20-21inches!

They set the IDEAL weight and subtract the amount of your weight on surgery day to determine something called excess body weight (EBW).

IDEAL Weight - Surgery Day Weight = EBW (excess body weight)

EBW X Your Surgical % of Expected Weight Loss = Expected Pounds Loss of EBW

EBW - Expected Loss = Goal Weight.

:)

The End.

(BTW, I have Champions. They are cute, cheap, and FUN-ctional!)

(Double BTW, looking mighty good there @sillykitty!!! Hugs!)

Brooks Ghost sneakers all the way!!!
Light weight, great arch support (I do put extra added support inside bc I have low arches). Feel like your walking on a cloud.

7 months post RnY and I’m finally getting the hang of eating enough to fuel my body to run and survive moving all day at work! Am I the only one who has considered vegetarianism at this point after surgery? Honestly eating meat feels like a chore now and I could do without it. I’ve been meal prepping for a couple of weeks and I think I want to make next week a vegetarian or pescatarian week.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
