I just wanted to share how absolutely ecstatic I am to have had this surgery. :)

I was never deeply unhappy with my weight pre-surgery. I mean, I wanted to be thinner, but lived a happy, successful, fulfilling life. For the most part it was the little things that annoyed me about being overweight, not being able to wear cute clothes, feeling self conscience when I order a non-salad at a restaurant, etc.. The only time my weight truly bothered me was while vacationing. I hated not getting the most out of my travel, and holding my friends back with the physical limitations my weight entailed.

I just returned from a fantastic vacation, and it occurred to me how dramatically happier my weight loss has made me. I didn't have any thoughts at the back of my head about being the "fat American". I walked for miles and miles everyday and it didn't phase me a bit, no foot pain, no exhaustion, nothing. I was the one suggesting to walk vs. take an Uber.

Thinking about it also made me realize how having all those negative thoughts about my weight being gone from inside my head has improved my daily life as well. I don't feel guilty when I sit next to someone in an airplane. I don't have to switch to flats as soon as possible after a meeting. I can wear pencil skirts and sheath dresses. When I see a stranger looking at me, I now assume it's for a good reason, not because my size makes me stand out. I no longer snore, and don't feel self conscience sleeping with my bf. Sooo many little things that really add up!

Soooo... remember when I was bitching about being exhausted and mental and thought it was B1 deficiency? It’s not, it’s Hashimoto’s.

I don’t see anything linking bariatric surgery and Hashimoto’s (in fact, some people say surgery alleviates symptoms), and I’m right on the leading edge of the segment most likely to get it (women age 40-60), but have any of you got it? If so, before or after surgery?

if anything, I’m sort of relieved about the diagnosis - the depression, stalled weight loss, lack of energy, forgetfulness and visibly puffy face (?!) were really freaking me out. A sudden decisive change 9 months after surgery had me seriously worried this was VSG-related and permanent. It’s still likely to be permanent, but at least Hashimoto’s is widely understood and treatable.

Awwwww shazam! That sure explains things but that is sad to hear!!!! ((hugs)) Have they started your thyroid meds yet? Is it still too early to ask if you feel any relief yet?

I'm so sorry you have to experience this!!!! :(

So sorry about this, but, as you mentioned, at least you know what it is and it's treatable. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks, GT! Yes, I'm almost there. Having to tighten my diet to keep the gallbladder happy has moved the scale a couple of pounds. Getting so close to goal! So long as I stay super low-fat (clearly no Keto for me) I don't have any pain, so that's what I'm doing.

So sorry about the GB stuff. ((hugs))

But FYI, you can be in a "keto" state without doing fat. :) I just eat low carb and low fat. Works for me. If I eat high fat stuff, I get so sick. Miserable! :(

I need a new phone again... I know I know but I accidentally washed my phone with my bedding (story time 😂) so I'm using an older one that's terrible.

One more phone mishap and Walden here I come.

I'm so happy for you to make goal like a champ and everyone that has benefited from this community because I know I have

I think we need a tears of joy response emoji

Woah! Sorry to hear that but glad you have a diagnosis. I'm following closely and prayers up for good health!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
