Buying Clothes Before Surgery

Recommended Posts

Met up with an old friend today and he told me that he was approved for his Gastric Sleeve Surgery. His surgery will be done within two weeks. As we were talking he asked me if I liked his new winter coat that his wife bought him for Christmas. I told him that it was nice and asked if he could return it. A puzzled look went over his face. He asked me why would I ask if he could return it. I told him by Winters end he will not be needing a 2XL sized coat. I told him that in all probability he will be at a large by next year and will need to buy a new coat. It didn't dawn on him that he would no longer be at this size for long. He told me that he got a lot of new clothes for Christmas and they were all sized 2XL. I told him that I was lucky as I had my surgery during the Summer and I had time to tell friends and relatives not to buy me any clothes for Christmas. He's going to see if he can return as much of the new clothing as he can. If not he will donate them to charity when they don't fit him anymore.

I know for me it took planning to get a new wardrobe and to donate my larger sized clothes. I went on all the department store websites and checked the clearance sections. I started looking during the Winter and I was able to buy Summer clothes on the cheap. I just needed to try to find out what size I would eventually be. (XL to Med) One thing I did do was cap the number of items I bought. Prior to weight loss surgery I bought clothes with abandon. I gave away close to 60 pairs of pants, 40 winter shirts, 30 summer shirts, a dozen pairs of shorts, numerous jackets and coats, etc, etc. Now I own 10 pairs of pants, 8 winter shirts, 10 summer shirts, 4 pairs of shorts and two jackets and one coat. I don't look for clothes anymore because I realized that I bought clothes to cover my obesity. The more clothes I bought the better I felt about myself. Today my better health makes me feel good and I tend not to need materialistic things like coats and a lot of food to make me feel good. That in itself is worth the price of WLS.

@Danny Paul

moral of story

newbies do not buy good/expensive clothes while you are losing weight,

as time passes (quickly) the clothes will become big on you. Many OP buy

clothes from a thrift shop as they are losing weight.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
