Depressed, Scared, and Everything In Between

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. This is my first post to this forum. I am one week post op, and I am feeling so down. Of course, my love of food is partially to blame. But, I live alone and I'm pretty much going through this by myself. Yes, I have friends who live far away that are supportive, but I still have the "sads".

I am afraid for a few reasons.

1. I'm afraid that I'm gonna lose my hair. I've grown my locs for 7 years and nothing would be more devastating than to have to cut them off.

2. I'm in the full liquid diet stage and idk what to think. I had cream of wheat, about 6 bites, and I didn't get full (I don't think) but I stopped because I was afraid I would overdo it.

3. I'm extremely tired. Even though I work from home, I'm afraid I won't get through the day on my first day back tomorrow.

4. I'll be starting my Vitamins tomorrow and I'm terrified because nobody seems to be able to tolerate them.

Idk, yall. I just want to live a normal life and I can't see it. I need to see it.

Thanks for listening

Most of this just need time. On the hair, the best you can do is get your Protein and Vitamins and hope. Some folks also do some other supplements, so hopefully they'll post here.

Most people don't start feeling full until they start eating real food. And sometimes that fullness feels differently than you're used to.

Tired - I was really tired for the first 6 weeks. I started teleworking on week 3 and, I'll admit, it was hard. But by week 4 I was back at the office and made it through every day. I'm now just over 7 weeks out and don't feel tired anymore.

On vitamins - try different things. I've been using the Bariatric Fusion chewables - orange. I started out with 2 a day and fairly quickly worked myself up to the recommended 4. If you're worried, it might be worth seeing which vitamins have a sample pack and getting a few to see which ones work best with you.

Like I said, I'm just over 7 weeks out and my life is pretty much back to normal. I'm no longer tired. Sure, I eat less, but I can eat pretty much anything I try (although I don't eat beef or poultry, so not sure how they'd go down right now). I was able to go out to eat with a friend before a show on Friday. Had a great dinner- shared some shrimp and asparagus tapas with her and she got another one for herself. I didn't feel at all deprived and it was super fun to be out. You'll get there - it just takes time.

I was still on the liquid diet when we went on a family vacation and I was far from pleasant!! I was a total bitch!! Everyone was eating and having a good time and I was watching them getting madder and madder!!! I really had to make many apologies at the end of that vacation!! But my friend it does get better!! I still have times when I crave certain things and I do have problems with wanting to snack before I go to bed (I try to eat healthy things but some are semi healthy)!! I am 7 months out and I still have to weigh my food and time myself between bites and I may have to do that for a very long time!! But I joined the gym and I have come off my blood pressure medicine (I was taking 2 a day), no more sleep apnea and I feel better than I have in years!! Yes my hair has thinned but I’m hoping that it will soon start growing again! Vitamins, I use the chews from Bariatric Advantage and I have not had a problem at all and they taste pretty good!! Things will get better and you will be thankful for this journey!! I am still in my infancy of this journey and my fear is going back to my old ways!! But I am more aware of the things I really need to work on!! Yes you will over eat from time to time, I have thrown up many times but now only every once in a while! Good luck!!

Thank you so much for your reply. I really needed it! I've never been good with patience, so I know I will struggle. Thanks again for the reassurance.

The first few weeks are pretty tough but it helps coming and reading the forums here. I'm about ten weeks out now and I'm so much happier now. But I remember finding the early stages hard. You can do this, you have so much to look forward to on this magical journey!

Hey...how are you doing? My gastric bypass surgery was December 4th. I was also experiencing some “sads” the first 2 weeks. I slept at night, took my daughter to school then climbed back in bed for several more hours. I’m feeling a lot better as I approach week 3! I’m able to expand my intake and I’m tolerating everything well. I’m soooo afraid of Hair loss. I had cancer/chemo in 2014 and my hair came back but it’s already quite thin. That’s a huge concern for me. I’m taking the Celebrate brand of chewable vitamins. I’m also taking daily Biotin. I space my Vitamins out to hopefully aid in absorption. I hope you’re better day by day! Merry Christmas! 🎄

Hi,

Major surgery and lifestyle changes will take some time to adjust to. Try and be patient with yourself. Rest, heal & become confident in the journey.

Vitamins are not one size fits all. Just because a ton of people complain they have trouble doesn't mean you automatically will also. It just mean you can use it like a consumer report. But you still plan to consume.

food becomes a chore for a while but this improves over time. Don't give up, especially not right out the gate.

I was tired for ages after surgery. It forced me to slow down and evaluate value of my time and energy. Also where I chose to place it. Clarifying.

Continue to research but there is a fine line between helpful and harmful when reading tons of personal recounting of events. You can begin to absorb the trama. Practice self-care and disengage if you feel that happening.

Safe Journey 🎈

I had the sleeve last April and what you are feeling is normal. It will not be long before you will begin to eat more normally and feel normal again. Best advice i would give is if you had the sleeve do not stop taking omeprazile even six months out or later. Hang in there time will pass make the best use of this window in time and do not rush anything.[emoji4]

Hello All,

I'm new to the forum, been lurking :116_eye: around reading various posts. My little sister underwent gastric sleeve Dec 21st and just not coping well post-op. Everything you mentioned, AutumnTheAries, she's going through. My father and I are here for support. She regrets doing the surgery. She's taking it out us, why we didn't try enough to ask her if she was doing the right thing. We keep telling her it will be get better. From reading various posts, seems most have been in this post-op stage. What else can my father and I do other than being there for her? I miss my lil sis :57_cry:

So sorry your sis is going through this. I, fortunately, only had these thoughts for about 48 hours then I was ok. I would say that she will start feeling better once she sees the weight come off, but she should be seeing that by now. Does she ever say why she regrets it??

Yea, she lost a good amount of weight, thus far. She regrets doing the surgery. Also, her eating habit has changed. I guess when an individual has been used to an eating lifestyle and then that lifestyle has changed it may be hard to overcome at first. For example, she's worried about eating out with friends and just eating a small amount of food. The friends may look at it as weird, but who cares! I may be wrong, but I believe this could be it or more. I'm just here as a concern brother, I want her to be emotionally and physically healthy. I'm even looking into hiring a trainer to help her in the gym.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
