Between 5-6 months post-op, I could tolerate steak without a problem (around 3 oz and well done). How he managed it that early, I'll never know. I was scared to try it, to be honest. I'm glad I did, though. It's a great source of Protein.

I'm actually a little worried that I seem to be tolerating almost everything well. The only time I almost threw up was when I tried to switch from chewable vitamins to the big pills. Tonight (6 weeks out) I tried broiled shrimp, and while it filled me up quickly, it went down fine. I can only eat a tiny bit but most foods feel just fine, and I worry that I may be able to eat too many things too soon.

If he had surgery in early November, then he’d be on a general diet according to my surgeon’s timeline. I had steak less than two months out, about half of a kid’s portion at a Black Angus in Phoenix. Not really seeing the issue here, Protein is protein.

I'm certain that I had some in that time frame - it was just another meat Protein. When my wife was going through this and commented to the doc that she was having some problem tolerating ground beef, he told her that such was not unusual, and to try good quality steak like a filet, and that many find that to be better tolerated. He was right.

Some of the differences are just individual tolerance differences, and some may be program related, and how the dietary progression proceeds. Our program has us on semi-real foods (soft stuff, at least - eggs, yogurt, oatmeal, fish, and purees - from the hospital on out, so we may, on average, better able to handle steak at 4-8 weeks than those who are on liquids for the first month. There was also no liquid or fasting diet pre-op, either, so the stomach had less time to forget what it was supposed to do.

Before surgery, I didn’t eat much red meat and ate mainly chicken, turkey, eggs, shrimp. Post surgery- I can only tolerate steak and can not tolerate any of the foods I loved. I can only eat a couple bites of steak though, not a whole steak. I think everyone is different.

Not sure what the issue is with steak as it has tons of Protein. I’m just about 5 months out and eat 2oz of it weekly with no issues 🤷🏻‍♀️

And since my September RnY I have had meat twice. 3 tiny shreads of tender Turkey 2 weeks ago and a minimeatball of home- butchered beef a week ago. And that's it, even pureed--- my Precious Pouch repulses it adamently. So be amazed, shake your head but there are ones at the other end of the food spectrum, like ME!

I'm technically not supposed to have red meat or pork during the first year. When I try to eat it, it feels so thick for just the one bite. I def couldn't eat a whole, half, or third of a steak of even 8oz. My dietician said I could eat deer meat because we get lots of it from my husband's co worker. The only deer meat I have been able to handle has been a deer summer sausage. It's even too dense for me. I was sleeved 9 months ago. At 2 months I was struggling with scrambled eggs.

Hell, my primary care doc told me to eat red meat once a week to keep my Iron up.

Last week I was attending a group session when one of the group members said that he went to a steak house to Celebrate his birthday and he ate a steak. He had gastric sleeve surgery in early November. He said the steak was so tender that he could eat it without a problem. The other group members looked at each other puzzled. How could this guy eat a steak less than two month post op from a gastric sleeve? I was sleeved close to a year and a half ago and I still can't tolerate steak. Pre op I would scarf down a 32oz porterhouse with no problem and then order dessert.
He then said that we shouldn't be ashamed to ask for a doggie bag as he went to a restaurant a few weeks ago and couldn't finish his order of roast beef and took the uneaten portion home. One group member asked him WHY is he eating this stuff and HOW can he eat it. He said that it was his birthday with the steak and he doesn't want to be deprived. He said if he deprives himself he's only going to want it more. It goes to show you, WLS takes care of the stomach not the mind.

Consider also that some people are less than honest simply for reactions of others. I'd take what he's says with a grin of salt. Either way, he's got some unrecognized mental issues that will continue to plague him until he faces them. This just may not be his time, if ever. Some just seen incapable of deep and honest retrospection.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
