Increased risk of colorectal cancers for people that undergo WLS

Recommended Posts

There was a study done a number of years ago ( approx 2013) that showed that obese patients that underwent WLS had an increased risk of developing colo rectal cancers . Whilst obesity is a risk factor for these cancers for some reason the rate became higher in people that had surgery. This seems odd as one would think that having the surgery and losing weight would cause a decrease in risk.

Wondering if there have been any further studies done and what the outcome of those was.

Do you have a link to the study? Sounds interesting.

I wonder if it has to do with increased Constipation. I was almost never constipated before I started the high Protein pre-op diet. Now (10 weeks past surgery) I am ALWAYS constipated - no matter what I try! :(

You know that sounds strange but I bet you're right, in an odd way it makes sense.

Constipation?

If we extrapolate that further then we get

Diet, high Protein, low carb, low fibre etc

So maybe what is causing this spike is the focus on protein and not enough roughage.
