Pre-op all protein shake diet 2 weeks

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone I am currently 26 years old and I am due to have gastric bypass surgery on Tuesday December 18th. I have been told by my nutritionist to go on a two-week pre-operation diet only consisting of Medi fast Protein Shakes. I was very strict on the diet until tonight I completely broke down and had a 12 inch italian bread with scrambled eggs in it. I feel completely guilty. But I was starving due to the fact that I have not had any solid foods since December 4th. I was feeling really emotional/irritable and overall starving. I started my weight-loss Journey at 304lbs. Today I weigh 290. During my 6 months of nutritional monitoring I was not exactly doing my best I did not lose much weight because I was not consistent .But just on the shake diet that I have been on I have lost a total weight of 7 pounds. I feel so quilty like I ruined my whole diet. I know the whole point of this is to shrink our liver size which mine was 19cm which is over the normal by like 3cm from what I have read. Have any of you screwed up like this before? And do you think me being very strict for the remainder of the 5 days will do me any good after I cheated horribly tonight 😟

You'll be fine. I'll have my gastric bypass the day before you. Just get back on track and we will succeed!

My surgeon only makes us do the liquid diet three days prior to the surgery but it is "strictly" liquid on those days. I had Thanksgiving dinner four days before my surgery.

I only have to do a 1 day liquid diet to make sure there's nothing in the pipes when they start cutting. I had a 6 month diet that required me to lose 10% of my weight. I think that shrinks the liver. It will be nice to get the whole pre-op stuff behind me and move on to the post-op life. This last week before surgery is full of uncertainty.

Wow it amazes me how it differs so much from surgeon to surgeon. And yes Ed I completely agree this last week and last days in general are just full of uncertainity. 🤔

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
