How did your family and friends react?

Recommended Posts

My folks were good with it. I told immediate family before surgery, and then sprung it on the rest of the family one by one, which was pretty enjoyable. Coworkers and friends get the info on a need-to-know basis; for instance, a new mom who’s struggling with baby weight got the full WLS story because otherwise it’s mean to make her think I’ve got some dieting secret, but the nosy gym fiend got stonewalled because he’s just rubbernecking.

I thought I’d get the most resistance out of my parents and siblings, but surprisingly they all said that they know I research things into the ground, so if I say that my metabolism is broken and this is the best solution, they believe it. I mean, they’re right, I’ve spent much of my career as a researcher and that is my pattern, but it was really nice that they all listened, asked non-biased questions and were totally on board. And now they’re all just completely delighted because not only my body has changed, but my personality too.

So glad to hear someone else researched this to death as well . I, too, agreed that after years of yo yo dieting , my appetite thermostat is broken and this seems a plausible way to reset it . I am worried when I hear that people have regained their weight but I think you can if you are not mindful of what goes in your mouth and how much you move . When is your surgery ?

I didn't tell many people. When I told my brother and SIL, I thought they might not be fully supportive. So I armed myself with data. As a percentage, how few people my size are able to lose significant weight and keep it off. The stats on how bariatric surgery works where diets don't. How rare complications are. How much I'd thought about it and tried every other way. In the end, I know they wish I hadn't had to do it, but they understood that it was the only way forward for me. Other than that, I told 2 friends and my boss. Just not anybody's business.

I told a few close friends and of course most of the folks at work knew thru the grapevine. I have not told my father or brother and SIL but I'm going home in march so they will def notice a diff. I hope to be down around 50lbs buy then

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
