Cannot stomach shakes

Recommended Posts

I'm on day 1 of my 2 week protein/clear liquids diet. I cannot get a Protein Shake down yet! I tried the stuff you mix and it smelled terrible and almost threw up and tried premixed Premier chocolate, but I've only gotten 3 sips down in an hour. I think I can survive on Clear Liquids and broth for 2 weeks, but these shakes are horrible 😢. Should I try Protein Water, and if so what kind? Did anyone else have this problem?

Protein2o is VERY tasty and doesn't have any odd texture issues.
Isopure Zero Carb RTD are good, but the taste can take a bit to get used to, and it does have a texture with how much Protein is in it.

Try different shakes, they are NOT all made equally!

Also if you find that you are having issues with them intentionally, check to ensure the protein is using an Isolate and not Concentrate. Nothing wrong with Concentrates over Isolates, just if you have lactose issues, concentrates have high levels of lactose where Isolates have little to none and typically are safe for even lactose intolerant folks to use.

I agree, Protein2o is tasty, no funky Protein taste.

I also agree that not all Protein Shakes and powders are the same. Some are vile, some are ok, and some are close to being good. My fave shake is medifast chocolate made with Fairlife milk and blended with ice (if I'm home). Premier Protein caramel in coffee is also good.

I also liked the protein Soups here in the BP store.

Try GENEPRO. Mix it with crystal light, Water or whatever liquid you’re allowed to have. If you mix it with warm broth, mix it first with cold water and add slowly to broth.

Odorless and tasteless. I still use it

I can't have whey so I've been using soy shakes and THEY ARE DELICIOUS AND ALL TASTE LIKE CAKE BATTER. lol. I use the Now Sports Soy Protein Isolate in chocolate (haven't tried vanilla yet) and also the 365 Everyday Vanilla Soy.

Atkins shakes are really good, too, but eventually started making me nauseous. :(

Within the last month I switched to Isopure Zero/Low Carb mix. It's great! Not too thick (I mix 1 scoop with 8 oz of water), and it's not too sweet (I actually add 1 packet of Stevia to a scoop). I tried drinking a Premier Protein after switching, and it made me nauseous. I like the Cookies N Cream and Dutch chocolate flavors.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
