Surgery CANCELED!

Recommended Posts

I just received notice that my surgeon has canceled my sleeve surgery because I have a 4cm hiatus hernia. I'm shocked. I understood hernias were repaired during this surgery. Anyone, please give me hope! Is this just an oddity to my surgeon, or cannot a hiatus hernia of this size be repaired? I am devastated, to say the least.

What-t-t? Bariatric Surgeons usually fix such things during the surgeries. You need Sherlock Holmes on this case! Paging Dr Holmes!

Thanks for answering. I have just heard back from the surgeon's office, after asking what my options are. They are telling me I can have the bypass, not the sleeve. So, I am feeling somewhat better. I guess the bypass somehow reduces the hernia issues. I don't know much about this. I've got my homework cut out for me today getting up to speed. I sure had a good cry after that disappointing news. Hope is now rising again.

Will that's BS to the highest degree. Did they say why they couldn't repair the hernia?

Why do you thin this is BS? The surgeon is supposed to call me today. I should know more after talking to her.

My gut reaction so take that as I know squat diddly. Any info I can give you is purely anecdotal at best. It's just that even my surgeon that hernia are commen and they patch them up. But they could come back. Anyway id imagine it just depends on the comfort level of the surgeon. They are doing the cuttin and snippin. I'm sorry sis.

4 cm is actually pretty small. however, it it is a sliding hiatal hernia then that causes more of an issue and it may have to do with the actual location of where it is in the esophagus vs the size.

Bypass is going to lessen your risks of it reoccurring. As a rule if they reoccur they cause some serious GERD which in and of itself can be a big issue post VSG. I think your surgeon is erring on the side of caution. Good luck with the RNY!

Come to Bypassland and Kangarooville and visit me÷A lot of n8ce people there. Do you know why we are Kangaroos? Because we all now have pouches! And you still won't have had 3/4 of your stomach thrown into the surgical trash. You're all there, just a little rerouting of the piping. And I have had the torture-side of RnY, if I can remain positive , believe in its ultimate rightness, have hope for my own healing, you should fare well. If not, honey you've got ME, I have paid and am still paying my dues. Going home this aftern9on after a weeks hospitalization with a PICC line in my upper left arm and will have TPN every evening until my ulcers heal down, wasn't getting sufficent Protein per 👄 mouth. And I am upbeat- know my surgeons are ordering this so my body can do its repairing. Could be out before Christmas and my Birthday( December 26th) not the gift I requested but at least it's custom- tailored for me! And Life is different but still So So Good!

hey mi75 is probably correct .See with sleeving the doctor would have turned you into a digestive garden hose type affair. With a sliding hernia it could slide up up and down until (worst case scenario) you have more sleeve stomach up in your chest where it Does not belong instead of in the abdomen where it does belong. Things get twisted, and I won't have my G sleeve after Fifty' s companionship on line, and I l8he you. He or She is trying to keep your best health interests at ❤.

I was hoping to have the hormone side of the stomach completely removed. I wonder why they're leaving it if it's not being used.

I don't know nothin' bout hiatal hernias. But 4cm actually sounds big. :D ;) 2.54cm=1in as a reference.

And dangit! I'm sorry to here this! I hope you end up doing the RNY though. It's totes worth it in my opinion!!

I am
new to this sight, I read the Forum but usually don’t respond. BUT ... i read yours & I had band removed after 3 yrs @ not very good results. The adjusting to the adjustment takes forever & bumping against washer & sink. I got gastric by-pass in July 5th & I am sooo happy. 6 Mths & 70lbs . no pain or throw up... I went to NYU Langone & was very pleased. Never hungry which is odd but then eating isn’t a Thrill or entertaining for me . i find things to do that are fun to do....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
