Pre op regret or jitters?

Recommended Posts

I’m getting the gastric sleeve in less than 24hrs and suddenly I’m overcome with all of this regret. I was good until literally a few hours ago and after reading countless blog posts and watching videos I’m really not sure about this. I’m thinking of food I’ll probably never be able to eat again, the possibility of gerd and other complications, and how I lost 60lbs already on my own so far so maybe I can do the rest? Maybe I’m saying this because I had to fast today and it’s the hunger talking but did any one else feel this way the day of surgery?

Hi Jazz. Losing the weight is easier than keeping it off. You will always have to "diet", but having a smaller stomach should be a tool to help you keep it off by helping you feel less hungry.

At one of the meetings I was feeling the same way as you are now. One guy pulled me aside and said, "look, I know that you're Italian (as was he). You don't have to give up everything, just get into the habit of eating less of it. If you deprive yourself of everything you love, you'll never stick with it. Just be smart about it."

I'm finding that to be true for me with my pre-op diet. The other day my family and I had a traditional Christmas Eve dinner because this Christmas Eve I'll be on the 2 week liquid pre-surgery diet. I had a little antipasto, a few baked clams, shrimp and scallops. The key was A FEW. I made sure not to stuff or bloat myself. And after surgery that is important because you don't want to stretch your new stomach.

Through the process just envision how much better you'll feel physically and emotionally with the new you.

You can do this.

Normal jitters that everyone has before surgery. Things will be fine!

There's not going to be food that you "Can never eat again" . Theres going to be things that you probably should refrain from for the first 6-9 months but it will be worth it!

Hope your surgery went well!

It is not so much that we have to “diet forever” but that we need to eat correct portion sizes and type of food for proper weight management. The amount we ate pre-WLS was not appropriate so we need to rediscover what normal/healthy portions are. This is what normal-sized people do too, that did not have bariatric surgery.
