Now 5 days out from surgery (Jan. 2nd). I’ve been on the Pre-op liquid diet for the past 9 days (it sucks).

But I’m now 266lbs., down a total of 42 lbs since I started the end of May.

Yesterday I saw my primary Dr. for final medical clearance. He was pleased with my progress, and told me that he thinks I’m below the minimum BMI for the surgery, in spite of the charts saying I’m 43.1. He explained that the BMI calculations are flawed, that they use the same formula for both men and women, and it doesn’t take into account muscle mass.

He feels that my goal should be about 210 due to bone structure, muscle density, and how I was at 215 lbs 9 years ago. But he is still encouraging me to go through with the surgery rather than just trying to diet the rest off, because I will plateau on my own, and the surgery will speed up the weight loss and help me to keep it off long-term, rather than yo-yo-ing as I have been doing thought the years. I agree. Time to get healthy for the rest of my life.

Did I say the two-week liquid diet sucks? It does. I just want to chew again, and Jello just isn’t do it for me. Oh well, just 4 more weeks before I can chew again.

How is everyone else doing?

That's one of the biggest reasons I'm doing this—I know that I could lose the weight without VSG because I've done it before. I've never been able to keep it off, though and I know that surgery will help with that.

I'm on day 3 and it's okay. I get to eat 2 meals a day, so I haven't been hungry. It's actually the opposite; I don't have much of an appetite. So far I'm down 5 pounds.

I am January 7th in Columbus Ohio, RNY. Super excited and nervous as H E double hockey sticks as well. This week I am getting everything in order that I need and making a list of all the positive reasons for doing this. I hope that helps if the first week is rough.

So where in Columbus are you having your surgery? I had mine at OSU last September with Dr Needleman. If I can help you to be less scared I will be only too happy to help. And I also was an RnY.

I’ve read your post. I am aware of your downfalls with Marcus Miller, but he is doing my surgery. I’ve really liked him. He seems very straightforward.

Still okay, one of my :CO-September Bypassers also had him as her surgeon, he was wonderful and did perfect by her and I am sure he will for you also. We just did not mean as we should have. He really is an excellent surgeon, Mount Carmel would not have made him Chief if he was not. And I do wish you a smooth successful surgery, okay?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
