Post op nausea

Recommended Posts

Hi - I had gastric sleeve surgery approximately 2 weeks ago. I did very well after surgery, no complications, no pain. I have been tolerating clear fluids well; however, the past several days I have been very nauseated to the point that I can't really stand to drink Protein Shakes or anything else. I can tolerate the shakes and even some yogurt, but the thought of food repulses and nauseates me. I have not experienced vomiting, just nausea. Did anyone else experience this? All I read is how everyone else is doing great...is this just my experience?? Zofran is not helping with the nausea.

How's your Water intake? Increased acid production can cause lots of sensations, including nausea. Take a prilosec or tums or other acid reducer and see if that helps any, if it does, you might want to talk to your team about it. ESP if the nausea meds are not helping... it sounds more like reflux/acid/gerd.

I was on Prilosec and Reglan, and had Zofran as a backup... some days it didn't help. I was fine for a couple weeks and THEN the nausea hit. It coincided with my ability to advance my diet. I gave myself a few days of whatever I could tolerate (a sip of Water, a sip of broth, maybe a sip or two of protein) and it let up within a few days. I felt mine was simply that my stomach wasn't quite ready to advance my diet yet. After a few more days of healing I was able to advance with no further issues.

I will say that I've noticed I can give myself a wave of nausea if I fill my stomach too full of water or another liquid. Other than that, no issues! Good luck. Remember it's only temporary!

I had a TERRIBLE TIME. I ended up on Zofran and Reglan and nexium. Then they warned me off the reglan and increased my nexium. It took a while. Make sure you eat bc if you don’t the acid is worse and makes nausea worse I think. Good ick to you it’s really hard for some people in the first couple months after. It DOES improve! It’s just so individualized.

Oooh me too. Mostly happens in the morning when I get up and drink some water!
