post op holiday loneliness?

Recommended Posts

HI guys. I'm 3 months post op and I know hormones go wacko after surgery and all...but is anyone else experiencing post op holiday loneliness (or have you in the past?). I find my boyfriend half the time doesn't understand what I'm going through, though he tries, but sometimes it's overwhelming. Due to things not surgery related, I don't have family members. I wrote them off because they are terrible human beings. I have my 13 year old son and myself and a very select (VERY SELECT) handful of friends. I like the holidays but also hate them because it's a reminder of what I wish I had, but don't. Maybe I'm just hormonal...maybe I just need new friends. I don't know. I just felt like I wanted to share this with you guys because at least I know you will all understand.

I used to be just like that. I had moved away from my children who are grown and i too wrote off family a long time ago after my parents passed. Do the best you can with your son.. Make memories! Go someplace and create traditions. Thats what i did with my children a long time ago before i had moved out of state. It took 3 years of holidays without them for me to move back and we have more fun over the holidays and none of it is about the food.

While I don't have any answers for your woes, I can commiserate. I am only a few weeks out from RNY and have decided not to go "home" for the holidays because...I mean, torture. For the most part, I'm fine with it, and I'm a strong, forever-single (thus far) 34yo woman. But every once in a while, especially with the random surges of hormones from weight loss, I'm like EMOTIONAL. Last night I was freaking a bit. My Aunt is such a sweetheart and she called me to remind me to make sure I plan some activities with friends or just to get out of my house for this weekend to make sure I don't get to reclusive/lonely since I'm "missing out" on the holiday.

I think I'm going to ask some local friends (I moved to KCMO recently) if they'll be around, and if they want to see the holiday lights with me this weekend. Do you have something similar you can do to brighten your spirits this weekend?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
