AP Lap Band - The newer 'improved' band. (w/ pics)

Recommended Posts

I hadn't heard of the AP band until recently (after my surgery!) so I figured I would create a topic about it to help spread the information.

The AP (Advanced Performance) Lapband was designed to address known problems with the original Lapband and attempt to mitigate them. It's new design is hoped to reduce slippage, erosion, and increase the speed of weight loss by blocking food more efficiently. They also say that they believe the new design will reduce blockages. It's new so they don't know how much these improvements help or if they even do. However, it's believed they will, hence the changes.

New features:

1. Cuff - the cuff on the AP band is 360 degrees around, as opposed to about 300 degrees on the prior bands (there was no cuff around the buckle on the old ones)

2. Cuff length - the cuff on the AP band is 18mm longer/taller than on the previous bands, so the surface area in contact with the stomach is much greater, hopefully increasing the speed of weight loss and maybe reducing the risk of slips

3. Cuff volume - the AP small holds 10cc, the AP large holds 14cc

4. "Omniform" Technology. The inflatable silicon portion of the band in contact with the stomach is 'pleated' to reduce chances of slippage and grip the stomach better.

5. An easier release mechanism to remove the band. This increases the ability to use laproscopy should the Lap-band need removal.

6. Softer silicon is used in the new AP band.

New band:

Older bands: Normal on left; VG on right:

My doc has not yet started using this band, but he has them to use when his supply of the VG band runs out. He has told me he will use this band on me. I hope the improvements prove to be what they are expected to be!

Thanks for the updated picture and information. We need to figure out how to put all three of these together and mike it it's own post so people can see them all the time.

That's the band I just received. I've heard good things and the surgeon has had good luck with it in the short time he's been using it.

I was definitely happy to hear that this is the band I have. I feel better knowing I have a potentially better band. Hopefully it will do as expected and reduce complications.

That is the band that I have got. My surgeon stopped doing banding for a while because he hated the complications with the old band but since this one came out in September last year is has started banding again. Must say I love it!!! And the whole less complications thing.

You do realize this thread is over a year old?

But, there is another thread about getting to the point of completely filling the band....I'm not sure, but I don't think it has ever happened with the new band. But, it does seem to take a lot of people more fill to get the needed restriction.

Sorry to butt in, but I have the new band by Allergan.

I had my first fill in April (surgeon was away) and my second one on 9th May then a third fill 5 days later.

I have so much restriction its untrue. Excellent... and have lost 4 kilos since last thursday.

Good luck everyone, get those fills done as fast as possible.

The size of the band will depend on what the doctor feels that will fit at the time of surgery. Every on is differant on how much of a fill you get. If you were to get almost that amount you would have to be very very tight. I doubt that you would be able to get it that tight with out having a lot of problems. I would talk with your doctor and ask him about the size and how much you can put in. I have the 10cc size and have about 6 cc in the band and tight.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
