Anyone having problems staying focused or concentrating?

I am 2 weeks post sleeve surgery. It is going very well for the most part. I have noticed problems concentrating and with short term memory. My wife said that I have not been myself. I think it is most likely due to consuming about 500 calories a day, my brain does not have the fuel it needs. I was curious if anyone else is experiencing anything like this?

Your brain needs fat, and Water. How is your water intake? Anywhere near 128 oz a day?

I can’t get the fat from what I am allowed to eat currently. I am getting over 72 oz a day but nowhere near 128 oz.

Why can't you eat fats? There are so many healthy fats that you could/should be eating... 72 is decent, but current medical research is showing that non-wls humans require 90-100+ oz of Water a day just to meet the bodies minimum requirements. For WLS, since we need more water to process fat removal, we need to be consuming more than the minimum requirements. See if you can increase your water intake and if that helps out. I'd also suggest getting some fats, either from fish, fish oils, supplements specific for mental support, nuts, etc.

I can only eat creamed Cereal, fat free yogurt and creamed Soup for 1 more week. Plus Protein Shakes. In 1 week I can add blended foods like tuna. No supplements for 30 days. I have put a call in to my Bariatric nurse. Thanks for the advice!

Get in touch with your Nutritionist and let them know about your continued fog, they can and typically will adjust diets as needed, what you are given is a general guideline, since everyone is different, those guidelines typically get adjusted and fine tuned to meet your specific requirements.

Good luck!

First stages are rough. I hope you will be feeling better as your diet progresses to soft foods/real food. Hang in there.

Well perhaps it is low calories or low Protein like I had, I am thinking clearer after my TPN was introduced more like the good parts of my presurg life, although there were many facets I don't like to remember, maintaining a sense of humor is important to me. After all, none of us will be leaving this world alive, might as well make our lives together pleasant.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
