1 week post op liquids questions

Recommended Posts

Hey folks, I figured I'd ask 2 burning questions I've had. I'm 8 days post op VSG.

1. Has anyone else had to do a TWO week CLEAR liquid diet post op? My surgeon doesn't even allow Protein Shakes, just Clear Liquids and I feel like I'm just not getting enough calories. I am getting 40g of Protein with a protein Water by Isopure but clear liquids for 14 days is driving me nuts.

2. How much liquids can you drink? I honestly feel ZERO restriction when I drink liquids, and can easily get 8 to 10 ounces in comfortably in a few minutes. Is that normal and/or am I drinking too fast? I make sure to take small sips, I don't get gassy or "stuck" the way people describe. But I feel like I can ingest way more liquid than I'm supposed to.

Thanks for any feedback

I had to do one week clears post op. Then one week full liquids. Clears were tough. Once I was a few days post op, I could drink a lot as well. The pyloric valve from your stomach into the intestine just kind of flips open for liquid, so that's not all just sitting on your pouch. I really felt like did they even DO anything in there?? Then the first time I ate something more solid, like that had to be chewed a lot, you can really tell the difference. I couldn't even eat one soft scrambled egg before I was stuffed. You'll see when you start eating more than clears, and when you get beyond Protein Shakes and Soups. You're totally normal. I wish someone had told me that! Lol. Good luck on your journey. We are all here with you!

Wow this reply totally relieved some anxiety! Thanks so much for taking the time to reply, I was worried I was already stretching my stomach out. I still have 6 more days of clear liquids before I can eat anything. My surgeon is so mean!

Lol. All of our programs are a little different but they all have their reasons I guess! Stick to it as best you can and know it gets easier. These first couple weeks are rough. They were for me!

Frozen popsicles and frozen Protein waters help to give you more of a sense of eating. Also, if you are allowed sf Jello, that helps, too. Good luck. It does get easier as you go forward. And I totally agree with Hrsnjs about the restriction. You're doing fine, nothing to worry about.

I only had first two days of clear, then full liquids for two weeks ( still on this phase). My Dr. has everything in two week intervals. my two week of full liquids ends on thanksgiving then i am on two weeks of puree, then two weeks of soft.. and finally.. right before Christmas.. i am at full solids!

I was on 2 weeks of clear fluids. Along with my Water, I used popsicles, Jello and chicken broth. I added Unjury unflavored Protein to my water and broth.

I'm only 1.5 weeks post op and have had similar concerns about being able to drink more than the 4 oz. of Water per hour I was prescribed to drink.

On Tuesday I asked the doctor about this and she said that if I could drink more without any problems, I was free to do so. She said being able to drink greater amounts was normal for some people. However, she did warn me not to guzzle down an entire hour's worth of fluids in one shot. She said this would put pressure on my staples.

Hope this helps!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
