Portion Sizes

Recommended Posts

I'm 3 months post op and my diet is finally expanding. I can now have raw veggies including salads, which I'm very excited about. Basically anything but fruits and carbs. I'm struggling a little with the portion size for things like salads. For those of you who have passed this step, how do you figure out the size of a salad? Do you measure it out or just eat until full? I'd love to be able to go out to dinner with friends and family and order a salad, but I'm not sure how to eyeball the correct portion size.

Why are you focused on salad ? That's a coping mechanism ur gonna wanna save for months and months from now. Right now should be Protein, protein, protein ,protein ,protein ,protein. My fav at this point? Clear Chinese: like sizzling rice Soup ... minus the rice.

More than a month out: grilled salmon with a side a butter. Hell yeah I said BUTTER. The least you can do to stay away from wheat carbs. Trust me. There is no amount of BUTTERED fish that will hurt you more than traditional carbs. You will be OK. Have patience. A watched pot never boils.

I would also recommend focusing on Proteins - maybe a few small bits of lettuce/ salad but get grilled salmon or chicken on top and eat that first

It’s pretty hard to eat much salad at 3 months. I’m at the same stage but was cleared for veggies and fruit at 6 weeks. When I’ve ordered salad out, I get the smallest salad possible with some quality Protein on it and focus on eating the protein. Salad Dressing is very high calorie so be careful how much you use, if any.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
