Spine/Back pain following gastric sleeve surgery

Recommended Posts

I have gastric and back spasms since having gastric sleeve surgery 3 years ago. I have some questions for anyone who knows anything about this. I was told there were 3 bulging discs in the spine, although i'm in pain in the back everyday. it feels like a cramping in the back, and it can be very painful. has anyone heard of this? its hard for me to sit down, and cold ice packs work on this pain. its very frustrating.

I'm dealing with back pain as well. For me, it's spinal arthritis, I had it for a while but I wasn't aware that I had it, this is because the visceral fat (the fat that surrounds your bones, joints, ligaments, organs etc was protecting the nerves from the arthritis, now that I've dropped so much weight, those spiky little growths are able to impact the nerves and it sucks. Working with a PT for stretching and other exercises to help... but it might never go away without surgery.

Have you gone to a massage therapist? physical therapist? chiropractor? yet to see if they can adjust or work through the issue? If not, I suggest you reach out to your PCP and see if they can figure out what you can do moving forward to resolve that pain issue.

I would recommend calling your doctor to get it taking care of and see what is going on asap before it gets any worse. Good Luck to you!

I have back pain as well and it got worse as I've lost the weight, even with exercise. I don't have issues with my discs. My core muscles and my muscles in general are just weak. I had my doctor put my into physical therapy to help me strengthen my body without doing stuff that may or may not hurt me. I really thought I was a tough strong chick, apparently not as much as I thought. Jumping into things like crossfit and crazy workouts when some of were 300+ pounds and nearly sedentary seems like a recipe for disaster (in my opinion).

Im writing this in case anyone who has back problems that could maybe be helped by physical therapy. It may work for you too to some extent. Maybe 😬

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
