Tasting not allowed foods

Recommended Posts

So I’m a week post op and sill in the clear liquid stage ugh. Starting full liquids Friday. I feel the need for flavors and texture already especially since I’m still feeding 3 kids and smelling their food and watching them eat. I’m not necessarily hungry it’s just a matter of wanting something and trying to break old habits. So today I chewed then spit out food just for the taste of it. I’m worried that’s gonna set me up to fail if I’m already trying to cheat. Anyone else do anything like this or eat before they were supposed to? How did it affect your progress? I’m also disappointed I’ve only lost 10 lbs post surgery.

I have the lap band, but had to be on the liquid diet and smell the food cooking for the rest of the family it is a very hard thing to do. If your allowed the sugar free popsicles I would put them in a bowl and chop them up a little and eat it with a spoon, sounds weird, but it did really help. I would also use different seasoning in my broth, and once in awhile would add a can of like diced Tomato, then would strain any and all chunks out, depending on the thickness i would strain a few times, but it would help with a little flavor. Hope this helps. Good Luck on your journey!!!!

I would strongly advise sticking with your plans as much as possible. Do not worry about how much or how little you think you've lost, focus on healing first, THEN worry about everything else. You've got a good 2 months or so of healing to worry about... You'll get back to eating foods you want again at some point, no need to rush it! You do not want to risk a staple line leak or worse, failure. Not something you are going to want to deal with... having your stomach open and start leaking acid into your abdomen (worst case scenario, but... it does happen)... best to just stick to what the doctors have told you.

Matt you are absolutely right I don't want to do anything to cause myself to fail and I haven't actually eaten anything. My biggest problem is self control it was before the surgery and now its it's something I'm definitely going to have to focus on and work at. Thanks for the advice.

I am a mother of 2 boys and I know exactly what u mean I am 6 days post op and am tired of the broth and liquids already . I am honestly saying yes I licked the spoon from my sons food ... idc I just felt like I needed something .... I even tasted Pasta Sauce ... I don’t think that’s going to set u up for failure. Do u think you are the only one feeling like this babe ? you r not alone .. 😍😍. after I licked the spoon I swear to you I just felt better ... it didn’t lead to anything more it was just that variety ... or that familiar smell and taste u know .....

You described me to a T!
I'm day 6 post op and went on a trip to visit my step-children with my fiance. Watching them eat all of the foods that I would essentially indulge on were eaten right in front of me.
I'm not going to lie. I had a weepy meltdown wondering if it was the right decision having my sleeve. I cried, put myself back together, and reminded myself WHY I decided to do this in the first place. I didn't let all of the pizza, burgers, nuggets, corn dogs, fried chicken, and Desserts fool me.
I am stronger than that.
I want to be healthy.
Stay strong girl,it gets better.
Keep a shake handy to sip on as everyone else has a meal so you fool your stomach.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
