Dumping twice in 3 days! Surgery just 7 days ago!

Recommended Posts

I just had surgery on the 1st. On full liquids, I was allowed to eat cream based Soups, so Monday I had strained cream of chicken. For hourrrrrsss I was sweating and then shivering and my heart was racing.

Now I am on puree and I had 2 oz of hummus and I just dry-heaved several times and I'm getting super flushed. I feel so so so nauseous and hot!

I am eating what they say I can but this is twice now in 3 days! Is this truly dumping or is it just from my stomach not being healed enough? Should I never try these foods again?

Is this going to be a risk every single friggin time I have a new food? ? This is awful! Every time I eat I am terrified. It makes me not want to eat ever.

Maybe take a step back and stick to what you were eating prior to Monday. I'm not there yet so can't say with any confidence but your body is probably still settling down. Treat yourself gently

Go back to the liquids and call your team to get some advice. Good luck ☹️

You could contact your team, tell them your concerns and get their thoughts on how to move forward. Never be afraid to pester them about every little thing.

Get well soon!

Safe Journey

Has happened to me too !! A few hours ago I literally puked my life, and I didnt have anything new ! So what I've done in the past is just done a reset, just for a few days. Go back to liquids, and that might even feel like much but imagine everything your digestive system has gone through ! Just take it easy and no worries you'll get back to where you should be. Some tummies are just more sensitive

You can always go back a stage don't rush eating if you're body isn't ready. I also had my surgery the first and was told 1 week Clear Liquids 1 week full liquids then into pureed or mushy foods. But to only add 1 new food per day so you can see how each thing affects you. I'll be starting full liquids Friday. It's a long blend few weeks but just go slow and hang in there I hear it will get better.

What's the sugar and fat contact of that cream of chicken? Also, stay clear of anything crazy right now... I dumped hard on Tomato Soup early in my recovery, not pleasant. The dumping gets better as you heal, right now you've got several factors contributing to things, the surgery itself has caused some serious irritation, add in high sugars or fats and it just makes things so much worse. Pay very close attention to all sugar and fat contents, we were instructed to stay away from added sugars, if there is anything like sugar in the ingredients, make sure that the 1 serving amount of sugar and fat is less than 5 grams. This worked out well for me, and now, almost 8 months out, I can get more sugar and fat without any issues. But at first, whoa did it suck. Just stick to what doesn't make you sick for now and then once you get cleared for all foods, THEN you can start trying those foods that didn't agree with you at this point.

Ok... I thought it was just me being cursed or something. lol. I didn't check the cream of chicken, but the hummus was low in fat and sugars. Maybe the seasonings just irritated me even though it was plain? It was definitely a different... experience.... than the Soup fiasco.

I'm going to stick to bland stuff for a while... maybe the only thing new try will be tuna or chicken salad. Unf. I don't want to be someone who ends up sick all the time! I thought it only really happened with really starchy or sugary things like Desserts or pastas, etc.

There were a few foods that gave me issues during the first 2 months that don't really do the same thing now. Dumping can be caused by a whole slew of different things, the 2 primary causes are fats and sugars. if dumping happens within 30 mins, that's usually from sugar, around the 3 hour mark, typically from fats. It's such a subjective thing overall!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
