Hi, benny10. I'm sorry your parents are saying that nonsense. I think the truth is that being obese increases the chances of premature death and that having surgery snd losing weight and getting healthy will increase your life span. Be brave and stay strong. We're here for you!

There's sooo many goofy theories out there about weight loss surgery. You took the step of educating yourself. Sometimes it seems like a lonely journey on the home front but it's your journey. It can be exhausting trying to educate other people and ultimately it's your health that's at stake. Keep following other people's WLS journeys on here and on YouTube and you will put your fears to rest in no time.

I feel the exact same way, I’m going through the pre op process now... hoping for a late December early January surgery date!

Tell them people don't usually live long after diseases related to excess weight like diabetes, heart disease and even depression.

Good luck with fighting the ignorance out there

Safe Journey

I think they are right, I don’t think I will live 100 years after mine and that to me would be a long time. The majority of people however live as long as anyone else.

Fear of any surgical procedure is normal. You are ready for this and deserve to live a healthy life. We are here to support you.

Family can say some stupid things out of fear or ignorance. Hope they can be supportive with time.

Nobody was supportive when I had my surgery, but I was committed and was miserable so figured what do I have to lose. Now I am present and loving participating in my life again. Now all those who knew me before and after surgery are 100% supportive, but I don't need that validation anymore. Believe in yourself and know this is the best decision you can make for yourself. It's time to finally know you can do this, with or without support. You've got this.

Gosh so many great responses here! As others have said, it's your journey--not theirs. I think also, not only are our loved ones fearful for the future for us, they do have ignorance of the procedures, and then they also feel a lack of control, so it makes them nuts and it's hard for them to hear our endless chatter about things. That's why BP is so great! Chatter away! We know where you are coming from and understand--plus we love people who do endless chatter--it's entertaining! :D

If you are sick of your life as you are now and are embracing and enthusiastic about the changes ahead. I'd say you are ready. I was at that point. It's not an easy ride and it's not magic bean surgery. IT's HELLAH work. I mean harder than you can comprehend. And you have to have a take no prisoners focus and attitude to see it through to the end...

Welcome to the boards. Let the party begin.

(Oh and I told very few about my surgery. Less 'splainin' to be done.)

My mother had Gastric Bypass with duodenal switch 26 years ago, she turns 70 this year. I promise you, she wouldn't have made it this long if she did not have the surgery. Them saying that people dont live long after bariatric surgery is patently false.

And never be afraid to rant about family mis- knowlege and nasty remarks. I had some real winners leveled at me, Old, Silly, Foolish were the nicer ones. Oh I did" missionary work" to some of them, either they were stupid or dense themselves. So I talk on here where I just don't be able to anymore them! May be my grand-daddy and grandaddy-in-law were right, "Them that don't listen and listen well, just got to feel!" Used think that was a HARSH THOUGHT PATTERN , now I see their wisdom. And how is EVERYONE'S DAY SO FAR?😝😬😝

My dad did not support my surgery either. Now he is the biggest proponent of Weight loss surgery. He said he "got his daughter back". He was afraid to lose me. What we realize after the fact is that he lost me years ago because I couldn't/wouldn't do some things for fear of not being able to keep up. Now they are all working to keep up with me. This surgery gave me my life back!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
