How long after surgery before you returned to work?

Recommended Posts

I am an account manager, total desk job. I was curious how long others were off work due to their surgery.

I have desk job similar to you. I'm 56 years old. I took two weeks off. Was really tired but made it through. My friend same age took three weeks and she said she really needed that extra week. So it just depends on how you feel. If your younger and no complications and financially need to return to work, you should be good in one week to return. Only you can judge that.

Put your health first. Your having surgery and lordy, lordy..your body is going to go through alot. So take the time you need to heal. unless of course, if you can not afford to be off work then your situation may be that you have to go back to work right away. I would not, as an employer, even want someone to return to the workforce after a few days.

I'm an accountant. I took one full week, then a week of half-days. Then back full time. Good luck!

Surgery on Thursday, flew home Sunday, back at work Monday... wouldn’t necessarily recommend that but I didn’t have a lot of choice and just got lucky that it went as smoothly as it did...

@MikeIL

go back to work when YOU feel better. Not before. you might

be tired, nauseous, weak, etc take half days off for a week? a

few days? your body leads the way - listen to it!!!

good luck next week

I took a week off and ended up taking some unplanned half days in the second week. I probably should have taken 10 days - 2 weeks off.

What I didn’t realize is that in addition to recovering from the surgery, I’d be functioning on very few calories in the beginning. For me, it was less than 300 for a couple of weeks. That alone made me feel weak and woozy. My job involves traveling between sites and I barely had the strength.

I'm in tech sales, generally a desk job. I spent one week off, worked from home for the next week, and was back at my desk for week 3 (last week). I was tired by Friday, but I made it. Now I'm spending the weekend resting.

I have a very busy desk job and took 3 weeks off. The extra week for myself as I needed a break from there. My company paid for my first two weeks as they put dollars way for employees that may need personal time or surgery.

However, I feel so weak I need this last week.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
