Recommended Posts

Were you told how much Protein to consume as well? If you were it can be worked out how much fat you are expected to consume.

Okay if you know you total calories and your Protein grams and carb grams you should be able to work out how many calories can be allocated to fat grams.

Say 800 calories, 100gms protein, 50 grams of carbs:

Protein and carbs are approx 4 cals per gram so 800 - (150 * 4) = 200. Fat is 9 cal per gram so 200/9 = approx 22gms of fat.

If 600 calories, 75gs protein and 50gms carb. 600 - (125 * 4) = 100. 100/9 = approx 11gms of fat.

Yes great math! But I would just add, PLEASE follow your doc's specific plan, cuz for most of us, pre-op, 50g of carbs will be WAY too many carbs to effect quick change in the liver volume during that brief 2 week diet immediately leading up to surgery. For most of us, we'd need <20g of carbs.

I was on liquid diet only for the 2weeks pre-op. I honestly wasn't allowed any food at all, just my low carb low/no sugar Protein Shakes to give 80-100g of Protein per day pre-surg.

Which is VERY different than the 1st 6 months leading up to surgery. :) For that diet, then maybe 50g of carbs would be just fine if most of that is from low glycemic veggies/fruits/seeds/nuts/dairy. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
