Banded since July 25,2007 & Losing My HAIR

Recommended Posts

Hi -

My name is Angie and I was banded on July25,2007. I have lost 62 lbs so far and i feel pretty good. My problem is that I am losing very large amounts of hair. I had thick hair to start with but i am actually getting very thin and it worries me. Does anyone have any suggetstions. I was told that if i ate 60 grams of protien a day that this wouldn't happen in such a great amount.

Please help-

Thanks:help:

Hi Turtle, I had this problem after following a VLCD (very low calorie diet). The Hair loss happens not during the restricted diet but when you return to eating normally. What happens during periods of very low calorie intake is that your hair stops growing. When you resume more normal intake it takes advantage of the increased nutrition to regenerate itself, therefore you lose old hairs to make way for new growth.

This is temporary and you will soon see that you have short new hairs growing in amongst the rest and before long your hair is back to normal. Believe me no-one else but you will notice that your hair is temporarily finer.

Turtle, I'm so sorry you are losing your hair. That seems fairly common from what I've seen here. I am very concerned about that as I have very thin, fine hair now and if I lose any after surgery it will be very noticeable. However, I would rather be thin and healthy in a wig than fat and unhealthy with my own hair. I know it will grow back but I am still nervous about it.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
