I'm doing great! No issues to speak of...only a time or 2 of stomach upset, but other than that all is good. I do have a problem finding foods that both my husband and I can eat. He is very picky and likes a lot of foods with more fat than I need (he is very thin and can handle it)...so sometimes I am fixing 2 different meals. Also, I am getting cravings, but I know it is my head and not my stomach that is wanting the food. So far I have been able to ignore the cravings...and find that drinking more Water helps, I have begun exercising (treadmill and stationary bike) which makes me feel good, but I have to watch it because I have a bad right knee and it hurts when I do too much, but on January 10th I will be getting a Monovisc injection in that knee, which will help it a lot and will allow me to do more. Anyway, Congratulations again on your insurance approval and let me know when your surgery date is.

I had to have 6 months of nutrition counseling, a psychiatric evaluation, had to have a BMI of 40 or greater. Or 35 with at least 2 comorbidities, and my surgeon required a cardiac evaluation and a barium swallow. Good luck!!

Sooo my rny is January 7th. I start my "2 week diet" tomorrow per my doctors nurse. I really thought I wad going to have to do all liquids leadeing up to surgery but NOPE! I'm so ready to be done with all of this and be on the other side of it. The closer it gets to my date at this point the more nervous I get.

Congrats to all who are on your liquid diet. I have been on mine as well to prep for my Jan 2 surgery. Only lost 5 lbs though since starting. But still, better than nothing. I know I will be losing more slowly due to being on Steroids. For the most part I've been drinking Powerade, eating creamy Soup, 2 Protein Drinks and sugar free pudding, Water, and a portion of grits per day. My only distraction was a stale bag of Fritos I found in the cupboard. I ate a single Frito and then wet the entire rest of the bag so I wouldn't be able to eat more. HA. 🤪 I felt like a crazy person doing that but honestly I typically don't gorge but the thought of something crunchy almost drove me bonkers..LOL.

I only wanted to say is that I am experiencing extreme anxiety regarding the surgery. I am not an anxious person by nature, but I couldn't even drive home from our Christmas holiday today. Now home I'm feeling a little better. I think it's a combo of being on this liquid diet and the never ending headache (6 days) I have currently as I wean off of caffeine, diet cokes, solids, and Aleve that I use for my Rheumatoid Arthritis. And I'm cold. I guess without carbs to keep me warm. I'm cold - a chill that just WON'T go away and I ache a bit. So I bought a heating pad - since the Surgeon said to bring one along to the hospital, but I'm using it even now to stay warm.

And...my husband..who cannot afford to lose weight - lost 7 lbs this week as he was trying to not distract me with foods that I cannot eat so he ate the same thing. Sweet, but oy that made me feel guilty.

I've also made sure to walk at least 30 mins per day since starting the liquid diet. I figured I'd better be prepared before going into surgery to do that so I can continue afterward!

HUGS to all of you!! Keep positive - stick to your liquid diets. Keep your eye on the goal! ;)

Good luck on your surgery! I'm on day 2 of my liquid diet and I am beyond starving.... but my liquid diet is just that.... liquid. I get nothing of substance on my diet, 3 premier protien shakes a day and 8oz of sugar free Jello 2x a day and no less than 64oz Water a day. But, I've lost 3 lbs since yesterday, so that's encouraging!

It’s 3 weeks today until my op. I’m not really nervous yet, more impatient. I need to get rid of this fat suit and back into some decent clothes. I look at photos and think that can’t be me, surely I don’t look that bad and wonder how and when it happened.

I don’t have to do a preop liquid diet I have just been told to stick with clean eating.I shall start that in Jan. Let’s hope these next 3 weeks go really quickly

Greetings all:

Checking in with everyone - for those of you with dates in the first week of January. how are your liquid diets going ?

The liquid diet hasn't been easy, but I think finally the caffeine headache kinda broke. I've just cleared the 300 mark. I haven't been under 300 in years. I know a lot of it's Water weight but *still*! :). I started out at 313 went up to 320 during the 6 mos diet and am now at 298. Woohoo!! Progress! Keeps me motivated. *That* and the popsicles!

One thing - it looks like I'm going to be through this alone. A little emotional about that. My husband is going through gastro health issues and doesn't think he can stay with me at the hospital - he needs his own personal bathroom. We're all adults here talking medical stuff so I don't think I'm sharing TMI. Anyone else doing the same - doing this on your own? I feel very much alone as there is really no one else who can help me through this.

I hope all of you are doing well!! Looking forward to hearing about everyone's journey!

Jeanne

I got my date today. January 22. Miraculously I dont have to do a liquid diet except 3 days prior to surgery (but I do get to do a nice bowel cleanse the day before) I also was told to maintain my weight. I'm guessing so I stay within the BMI guidelines.

I've been obsessively watching Youtube videos of bypass people but I should probably ease up on that. Im getting scared of dehydration and dumping and all that other fun stuff.

I am just SO HAPPY to have a date, finally!

Alrighty - here goes January! Headed out to the hospital to be the first surgery of the day! Packed with heating pad, charger, robe for wandering the halls to remove gas from gut..LOL. I'm at 290 as of this morning. Lost 17 lbs on the liquid diet.

See y'all on the flip side!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
