Fast Recovery - is this abnormal?

Recommended Posts

Hello! I was sleeved on Monday, Oct 15th. Surgery went well but was very sick from the anesthesia. Stayed one night in the hospital. During 1-4 days post op, I have been drinking partial Protein Shakes and puréed Soups. My calorie count is maybe 500-800 max. Today, on day 5 post op, I decided to try turkey chili and it's been fine! Overall, this surgery has been pretty manageable. I can eat 6-8 ounces of food with no problem. I wait to drink Water after 30 mins and it's been fine. I feel hungry a lot! I am worried I got the placebo sleeve! It seems like the majority of people have a really rough road and I am having the opposite experience which I am thankful for but makes me question why i am able to eat and drink so easily. Should i be concerned at all? Would love any feedback or if anyone is in the same boat.

Take things very slowly, just because it worked out when you tried does not mean it always w8ll. I started out wonderfully smooth, no hospital pain, thoug Dr Needleman did not make and fashion me a pouch. And I started out with good tolerance. Did not stay that way, I have a stricture between my stomach and small intestine and only liquids drizzle through. There has been one attempt to stretch it on October 12, did not work so my doctor will try again on October 26 to give me the chance to eat solids. 7 weeks on a limited Stage 2 diet is zero fun. But I still will claim victory and this m8ght be Just right time for it_

Hi there

this place is full of people who start this trip wondering if the surgeon didn’t really DO the op! I certainly wondered it - seemed I could eat a lot, was hungry. My doc advised me to cut my meal portions back to the 3oz meal 3x a day that he had recommended, and give the new stomach a chance to heal, settle in.

Sure enough, the hunger went and I settled into my new, more delicate portion eating habits. Within 6 months I was well past my goal, I now have really healthy eating habits and have had a great, easy journey (apart from a tiny diversion with gallstones!)

Thank you so much for your response and feedback. That all makes a lot of sense and is great advice. Thanks again! PS. I've dealt with gallstones previously so feel your pain! Thanks again

I had a really easy recovery too, but don't rush it. Chili on day five seems fast, but I don't know your plan. Follow your nutrition plan, get your Vitamins and and fluids and you'll be all good. Some people are lucky : )

Sounds like you are doing very well and as long as your doctor/program okays the turkey chili and other solid foods you are good to go. I had no problems either but was 2 weeks on liquids then 4 weeks on purees. Amazes me how different the recommendations are. Good luck!!

Enjoy but don't take it for granted. I hope you continue with your great recovery but don't overdo things or strain yourself. Keep us updated as well. It's really an odd thing to hear the experiences of those going through a good recovery. Congrats to you and Best of Luck!!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
