Anyone Jump Rope?

Recommended Posts

I used to love to jump rope! In elementary school I was the "Jump Rope for Heart" champion 5 years in a row. Once I started gaining weight, I stopped doing any exercise. The other day I was thinking about how much I used to love jumping rope, so I went out and bought a jump rope and started. Well, it's a lot harder than it used to be. The first time I did it, I was only able to do 10 jumps. I know, thats sooo sad. But I continued doing a little every day this week and today I was able to do 100 in a row, although I thought I was going to hyperventilate afterwards. I was doing some research on calories burned per hour and based on my weight, jump roping burns more than jogging. Are there any others out there that like to jump rope?

You know I just bought a Jump rope last month to add to my exercise routine and your right it is a great work out. I try to do something new every week so I know I am working different muscles.

It really is a great workout. I was surprised at how many muscles I used. My abs are so sore (sounds crazy, I know, but it's true). It kinda feels like I did about 200 situps. Each day I'm able to do a little more. Like you, I like to shock the body by switching it up.

I've actually added it to my routine.

I shoot for 5 minutes. Of course I stop and catch my breath and drink Water many times during those 5 minutes but it's part of my workout now.

I started by only doing 10 jumps too. Holy crap that was hard!

Oh...I would love to...TMI ALERT!!! The twins ruined my bladder, so, until my surgery (perhaps in January), I cannot jump rope comfortably...but it is one of the things I am really looking forward to!

That and trampolining

ok... really stupid question.

do you jump w/ both feet off the ground or kind of skip / jump ?

I do both...I travel the length of the empty fitness center doing the skip/jump and I stand in one place doing both feet at one time. I'd say I do both feet more than I skip/jump.

Oh and in the interest of TMI,

I HATE the slapping sound of by flaccid stomach against the top of my thighs. It's horrifying.

I can so relate. same for me with jumping jacks. :) its horrible, so when I do them, I make sure I am wearing very snug shorts/pants.

I use both feet, it's easier me for that way. I tried alternating one foot at a time and I almost fell, so I'll stick with two.

I was very surprised at how hard it was. I usually do somewhere between 80-100 jumps, then I stop and catch my breath, then go again. I try to do 5 sets but sometimes I just can't make it that far. And sometimes by the 4th or 5th set I only do 50-60 jumps.

I too used to love it---now I am afraid I'd black my own eyes!!! I don't think they make a strong enough sports bra!!!

I actually have a tumor in my leg preventing the pounding type of jump, but have been considering the skip type as a change up....something my granddaughters and I could do together.

I bet 10 will wind me as well!

My thoughts exactly! :biggrin1: Actually, I started getting into jogging a LONG time ago and found a really good bra that straps 'em down but good! A company named Enell does them - they had them on Oprah one day. It's like I don't have boobs when I'm wearing this thing. They're all mushed up into my chin and my armpits and I look flat from the side - not an easy accomplishment, let me tell you! But when you're strapped into this thing, they don't go nowhere!! No more black eyes.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
