Rexcom 39 Posted October 19, 2018 The bariatric center I go to has VSG patients start on pureed food on day 3. I know it's uncommon, but there are others that do this also. They tend to believe recovery comes faster this way. Note: My bariatric center and the team of surgeons are highly rated and certified by BCBS (Distinction) and MBSAQIP. They've performed 1,000+ VSGs. Anyone else start pureed foods during week 1? 2 FluffyChix and Frustr8 reacted to this
FluffyChix 17,415 Posted October 19, 2018 I think maybe @Biddy zz did that in New Zealand and maybe even @Rainbow_Warrior in Aus? I am sure there are others in the states! Congrats! How long are you on purees? 1 1 1 Frustr8, Rexcom and clsumrall reacted to this
Biddy zz 🏳️🌈 1,004 Posted October 19, 2018 Yep, I was on mashed and shredded fish, beef, before I left hospital. Smoke portions, mind...
photogirl70 142 Posted October 20, 2018 My guidelines had us start purred early. It was called the "funnel diet".
Rexcom 39 Posted October 20, 2018 @FluffyChix We do pureed foods for 2 weeks, then soft/moist foods for 1 week, then beginning solid food in week 4. Seems a bit aggressive to me compared to what I've read, but again, these surgeons are very experienced and highly rated.
Screwballski 540 Posted October 20, 2018 My psychologist is also a Bariatric patient and Bariatric specialist. She attends conferences all over the world. She told me that all of the latest info points to starting patients off on bland purées and soft foods asap. We talked about this well before my May surgery. She advised me to follow my surgeons program but that for the last few years the research has been in place to support this purée/soft food out-of-the-gate method. It just takes surgeons and doctors a long time to let go of old ways. 1 1 Rexcom and Frustr8 reacted to this
camille88 12 Posted October 21, 2018 (edited) @Screwballski Yes! I have been eating puréed Soups since (along with Protein drinks) since day 3 & 4 post op and today I had turkey chili which is day 5 post op. I haven't had any problems and now questioning my process since most people are having such a rough time and On pure liquids for 2 weeks. I am glad to read your post and hear what your Drs advice. talleyjen3 0 Posted November 18, 2018 I’m so glad to read this post because I’m only 4 days out from having the duo switch and am soooo tired of the liquid diet already!!! I may or may not “cheat” now....lol
Swanton_Bomb 522 Posted November 18, 2018 Not exactly, but I'm on full liquids but after 5 days yogurt and blended black bean and lentil Soup, 7 days cottage and ricotta cheese. No eggs until the 15th day, no poultry or fish Protein until the 21st. It's easier to have options besides shakes but the downside is that it is harder to get your protein in because those foods are so filling. I can manage a 1/4 cup of ricotta, which is 8 grams of protein, a lot less than a shake. I am combining the two. The thicker foods, strangely go down easier for me. 1 talleyjen3 reacted to this
JessaK 59 Posted November 18, 2018 Yes! Purée 2 days after discharge. Soft foods 2 weeks out. The weird difference is that I can’t have full solids til 3 months. My Surgeon goes by research that shows that most leaks happen under 3 months because your stomach is still healing. He’s the only doc at the Bariatric Hostpital that has this rule though. I can tell my NUT doesn’t agree with him though. 1 talleyjen3 reacted to this

Happy Sleever 32 Posted November 18, 2018 Does anyone know of any companies who sell 4 oz portions of food with lots of Protein you know like Jenny Craig?
Heather E 68 Posted November 19, 2018 My Bariatric center also starts purees (cream Soups, yogurt, oatmeal) then after 2 weeks progress to soft foods. I got a "diet progression" list at each check-up. 1 week, 1 month and 2 months. No meat until week 4, unless it was canned tuna or chicken and very moist.
