Struggling to get cleared by doctor for sleeve surgery

Recommended Posts

Have been tracked by a professional bariatric surgery medical team for almost a year. Doctor says I am not ready for surgery as I have lost less than 10 pounds and struggling with dietary compliance. I respect his advice but am looking for that extra push to get moving forward. Any positive advice appreciated.

Not trying to be argumentative, but does the doc say you are not ready for surgery because you've lost so little weight or because you're not complying with his recommended diet plan?

You need to be tracked by a dietitian specializing in diabetes. You probably already know, but low carb high Protein diets are considered the diabetic diet. That's also the diet you will be on post surgery pretty much. I have diabetics in my family and it's real easy to just give up. We just lost somebody that took that attitude. I'm sure you have people that will be affected if you die from this. Take it seriously and stick to a diet specific to your condition. If you have to bring your blood sugar up, eat the minimum amount of fruit to bring it up then get back on the low carb/high protein diet given to you by your new dietitian you are going to find. You can do it man!!

Moreso the diet plan but have been trying now for a year. I am insulin dependent and that confounds appetite and lately I have had lots of low blood sugars

which I need to counter by eating

extra food

Do you live in an area where you have a choice of surgeons? If this one and his staff aren't working with your existing medical conditions, I'd change doctors if I had the option.

Or my recommendation, head for the nearest Bariatric Center of Excellence hospital, doesn't hurt if they also are a teaching hospital. I just had mine at Ohio State University-Wexner Medical Center in Columbus Ohio. My surgeon as well as being Chief of Bariatric Medicine and Metabolic Weight Loss is also a Full Professor in the College of Medicine. In my book, teaching hospitals are the best and always on the cutting edge!

I see,you are in Iowa-- head for Ames, you will not be sorry! They have a beautiful campus and an excellent Med School! And Go Hawkeyes!

I’d find another surgeon honestly..mine didn’t require any weight loss or preop diet. I just couldn’t be heavier than I was at my first appt. hopefully you find someone to work with you. The surgery will surely help manage the diabetes better. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
