The thought of a catheter.. scary!

Recommended Posts

I've only had surgery once before and there was no catheter. I just found out that I might wake up with a catheter after this surgery and it's kind of got me worried. I've just heard scary stories in my life about the whole catheter experience. What was your experience and I'm wondering are catheters pretty common with this surgery? I was told, it depends on the surgeon. Probably just fear of the unknown but thanks in advance for your input.

I'm with you man! I did NOT want to have it done... mainly because, being overweight, I was pretty self conscious about my manhood... I went under without one... woke up without one. So I thought I was in the clear.... until I had to urinate the first time... B U R N !... that's when they told me, "oh, voiding might hurt the first few times from the catheter. SO... I did have one. At least I was asleep when it was inserted and removed!

I was just so anxious of having to be away while some random nurse tech manipulates my member trying to wedge a hose into it... soooooooo glad it happened while I was sleeping.

Oh man! I hope I'm sleeping for the entrance AND exit of the "hose". LMAO!

I asked my surgeon's PA if they used catheters, and she said no. That's a perfectly reasonable question to ask your team, and it would put your mind at ease.

I know lots don't... some do, but also if the surgery runs longer than expected (like mine did), they still might do so, even if they typically don't use them. But most certainly he should ask, even could ask if they do, to have them do it while he's under.

I had a catheter put in when I had liposuction in 2009. They put it in while I was under anesthesia. I didn't even know I had one in when I woke up! I wondered hours later why I didn't have to pee... but I had been peeing the whole time and just didn't feel it. lol. I barely noticed when they pulled it out the next morning. Just some slight discomfort and it burned the first time I peed like I had a urinary tract infection, and it was kind of hard to "get it started". Granted, I'm a female so it had less far to travel, but I don't think it's nearly as bad as it sounds!

Had catheter for my surgery. They put it in while I was asleep. Woke up with it and had it for about a day. It didnt hurt while in, it was just weird. When the nurse took it out it didnt hurt at all and I experienced zero burning afterwards.

Only registered nurses can place a catheter. Thankfully being asleep it will be a pc of cake. When they remove it, just don’t look. 😀😀

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
