Birth Control Options after VSG

Looking for the best birth control option for after vsg surgery.... i know my doctor said i had to wait a few months after the surgery to go back on it but i was on the patch before but it made me very sick i had to stop,

anyone have luck with the implanon stick?

A lot of girls seem to like the Nuva Ring, others say IUD, haven't heard about the impanon recently. Just an interested watcher from the other side of menopause.👵

I was on the Nuvaring for the past two months. I had no bad side effects except for bloating, and enough of it that my weight increased by 7 pounds while I was on it, and then I lost those 7 pounds within 2 weeks of stopping. I knew it was Water weight because I could feel the bloating, but it was still frustrating. Overall, I just feel better without the extra hormones, so I stopped taking it. We want to have another little one soon anyhow, so I figured that was the best move for me.

@TexasMommy80 yeah I am the same way. but what about right away following the surgey, my doctor said I would be very fertile and should consider going on some type of bc.
He said it wouldn't be very wise to get pregnant for at least 1 & 1/2 years after the surgery date.

I never got a clear answer from my doctor... I am on the pill and have been for a looong time. I don't want to get pregnant but my gyn will not do a permanent procedure. I have read that the pill can become less effective as the estrogen releases in to your blood during weight loss, but my Dr said it should not really be a problem. (like what does "shouldnt be a problem" mean?) I don't want any accidental babies!

I'm on the Depo shot, have been for years because I can't have kids safely due to my heart condition. My surgical team hasn't batted an eye about it and hasn't mentioned any concerns about it being an issue later. I love the shot so much more than the pill. Haven't had a period in a few years and haven't missed her even for a minute!

You can go on any form of birth control after the sleeve luckily.

When I had my sleeve I was on the pill and loved it! Now with my bypass my options were IUD, Nuva ring or implanon. I chose Nuva ring. I have not experienced any side effects with the ring, or even weight gain. I am happy with it

Obese women who take the pill have a higher likelihood of blood clots and stroke. My OB refused to let me use an oral contraceptive

One month after my surgery I had to go back on the pill! I suffered horrible cramps again just after stopping for 2 months. It was terrible. My surgeon said it was okay to go back. Good luck!

So before surgery I went and got the Kyleena IUD put in, because I just didn’t want to deal with remembering to take a pill or put something in my hooha. It hurt like a b$&ch to get it put in and I have wonky as heck periods now, last months was 4 days and was super light... this month has been 1.5 weeks so far and has gone from light to heavy to light to heavy.

Not sure if this is a winning decision, but I haven’t gotten pregnant so I might as well stick with it at this point... 😂

I used the pill before surgery, had to be off of it for a month after, and went back on after that month. I've changed brands/ hormone formulations twice since surgery and still have breakthrough bleeding. Apparently there is one more option/formulation I haven't tried--otherwise I'm going Nexplanon route. And if I have to do that I will go screaming and pouting and everything in between because I hate the idea of something being "implanted" in my arm...even if it can come out whenever I want.

My surgeon requires non-estrogen birth control so I had the Mirena inserted the day before surgery. My body didn’t like it & it came out on its own 12 days later. Luckily I saw it in the toilet so no surprise pregnancy for me.

I was on and off Depo for years. My favorite bc, EVER. But I got scared off because of the effects on Calcium and bone density. https://nwhn.org/depo-provera-and-bone-mineral-density/

Also when I went off depo after 3 years, it took me over a year to get my period back. I didn't like that the hormones had built up in my body for that long. Also if I had wanted to become pregnant during that time.it wouldn't have been possible.

I got the Mirena IUD just prior to my WLS. I agree, it hurt like a b*tch, and I have irregular spotting both light and heavy since. But I like that is is the most effective form of bc, and I don't need to remember to take a pill, or go get a shot, etc.

I've been on the nuvaring for 9 years now (minus when I was trying to get pregnant/pregnant). I like it well enough. As with many contraceptives, there is a risk for blood clots, but I'm trying to minimize them (I dont smoke and I'm trying to loose weight).

Actually birth control was one of the things that drove me to surgery. I was trying to get an iud after my son was born and the obgyn couldn't visualize my cervix well due to its placement and my level of obesity. That was like a big slap in my face to wake me up and here we are. 🤷🏽‍♀️
