Dumping Syndrome 2+ years Postop

Recommended Posts

Hi all - I had gastric sleeve surgery 2/5 years ago. For the past few months I have been having dumping syndrome. The reading I have done all says that it comes from eating simple carbs. And if I do eat Cookies (my main downfall in life) I tend to get it. But I will get it when eating non-simple carbs. For instance, this morning I had a egg for Breakfast and had a fairly bad "attack". It seems to be more of an issue in the morning, than other times of the day. Has anyone experiencing dumping syndrome found ways of preventing it? Thanks

Hi, I'm 10 months post op and it happens whenever it feels like no pattern to it at all. I don't really eat simple carbs, not often anyway. And it happens with pure Protein sources too. I'm really interested in how many more of us are experiencing the same thing.

What did the last 2 days of eating look like for you? Total cals/carbs/sugars per meal or eating event as well as a daily total. Also, how long do you go between meals. Meals=anything containing calories or sugar alcohols--even Crystal Light could potentially be a problem as can Protein Shakes and bars. You will find the answer within your last 1-2days of meals.

Track everything including the times you ate and when the dumping happens, it's not always carbs that cause dumping, since there are 2 versions of dumping, within 30 mins is typically carbs/sugars, the 2-3 hours after ingestion is typically from fats/oils. Without a full breakdown, it's all just guessing.

Research Gallbladder attack. See your doctor.

Nope, not a gallbladder attack - BTDT, and the gallbladder and I have parted ways (a year or two before the gastric sleeve). Talked to doctor. He just suggested avoiding simple carbs. Congrats on the 100+ lbs weight loss BTW.

You can have bile duct stones without a gallbladder that can cause unpleasant symptoms......particularly if you were prone to them before, it might still be a possibility. Particularly, if what's setting your attack off is an egg.

Try avoiding simple carbs as directed......if it doesn't work, think of this as a back up idea:)

My dumping and my gall bladder/bile duct stones were extremely different symptoms. Not sure if that is the same for all.

Dumping from sugar - sweats, fatigue, some diarrhoea, yawning, maybe nausea but pain free or very mild cramps at worst, lasts 30-45 minutes and suddenly stops. Unpleasant but manageable. Occurs as a set of symptoms but in degrees - mild for small sugar overdose, stronger for big sugar eating screw-up.

Gall bladder - extreme pain- seriously painful. Worse than labour pains! Nausea and retching, esp just before bouts of diarrhoea, pain level at 6/10 for 45 minutes then 8/10 for 15-20 minutes when I cannot sit on the toilet even, just would lie on the floor groaning. Hot sweats from the pain, that stop in the lower-pain parts of cycle. Repeat cycle every hour or so for 12-36 hours.

In my case, the difference was chalk and cheese. Mostly - gall bladder = overwhelming symptom is bad pain; dumping = nasty but almost no pain.

I agree. I had gallstones. This aint it. Everything I read says its related to simple carbs. But it's usually only in the morning, and it doesn't seem to matter what I eat. So decided I just need to delay when I have Breakfast, and just had tea before work, and I still got it from that. Guess I should just avoid any intake for a couple of hours after getting up.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
