Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Part Two Dr. Kirshenbaum

Recommended Posts

A new Dr. K thread is being born! Pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee, and join in!

:)

The current thread is great, but I have heard from a few people who have been intimidated from the length and tightness of it. I have never been able to read every page myself, but have learned a lot from being there!

This new thread has NOTHING to do with undermining the current thread, but it seems if the car feels too small, get a bigger one....so, I am going to put my head on the chopping block and try it out...I just hope that no one reaches for the cleaver.

It would be great to discuss how you found out about Dr. K, what your experiences have been, when you were, or are, banded, where you're from, fears and excitements you've had, etc.

I am hoping that if this thread is meant to survive, it will.

If you are more comfortable jumping into this new place, please post. Without input, this ain't going nowhere!

Please, don't anyone grab the meat cleaver, this is not an attack, for I have found support on the other thread. There is more than enough room for all of us! I am just hoping to meet needs that might not be getting met.

C'mon folks, post!

:)

Hi Kelly! No meat cleaver here. Just jumping over here to say howdy and I think this is a great idea. If fact, I'm hoping one day for a whole message board with multiple threads devoted to our favorite lap band surgeon, the fab Dr.K (more ) I mentioned that the Marilyn in the office once -- I would love to see it hooked on to www.lapbandrockies.com. Wouldn't that be da bomb?!

You know that I love your writing style and you make me laugh, so I'm gonna pop in at both places, if that's ok. (I've been referring to my band as a "shock collar" ever since you coined the phrase awhile back :) )

About me: I'm Karen, 47, married 24 years to my college sweetheart, live in God's country -- NC, where the sky is tarheel blue. Mom to 2 boys, 2 kitties, and Barkley, the most wonderful lab that ever fetched a tennis ball. Banded 9/19/07 by Dr. K. I'm a nurse case manager ( do not shoot me, I have nothing to do with approvals/denials). I'll usually chime in on things about autism and PCOS, because they affect my son and me respectively). I was a PB virgin until recently, now it seems I'm sliming and vomiting all the time -- would that make me a PB 'ho? I learned about Dr. K here at LBT and have always found wonderful support at his original thread here. Love my peeps there, too! Enough about me already.. who else is out there???????????????

Hey Kelly and all of us Dr K peeps...... This is great, thanks so much for starting it... I am a 59 1/2 year old mom to 4 wonderful kids, grandma to 9 fantastic grandchildren and great-grandma to the cutest most awesome great-granddaughter.. (am I bragging ??? :biggrin1:)

I have been married to the sweetest most wonderful guy for 19 years now... We are retired and live and travel full time in our motorhome... I have lived in Colorado all my life, having grown up, married and had my children in the Denver and surrounding areas... In 1985 I moved over to the western slope, met and married my DH and lived and worked in the Grand Junction area until last year when we retired, sold our home and property and hit the road...

That's about it for me, except I was so happy to find Dr K and be able to come home to my beautiful Colorado and spend some time with family....

Take care all and I'm looking forward to hearing from other Dr K patients.... :humble::wave:

Ladies,

This is soooo... refreshing, thank you so much for the new thread. What can I say about me, I am in my late 30's and single yet i care for two of the most wonderful beings my niece and nephew. 15 and 21 respectively. I am new to Denver and really excited to have gotten my band from Dr K. Have you notice that this man is very sensitive. When we last talked I mentioned that he definetly has the gift of healing. I got banded on Nov 1 and I am on mushies and doing better. My first week was rather painful. I am actually looking forward to meeting with his daughter as for some reason it appears that I am able to eat decent portions without much side effects. In addition in a couple of weeks I will get my first fill so we'll see how that goes. Maybe I an starting to get a little too comfortable with my band. So ladies I hope to continue to communicate via this forum and see how you are all doing. Oh! one more thing, maybe someone can tell me how I can get my ticker posted on my thread, ok so I am a moron but for some reason I can't seem to get it right.

Please be well.

Banded on 11/01/07

By: Dr K

Rosey,

Until your band is filled, you will be able to eat some pretty decent (although probably not like your pre-band days) portions. The band is just in place and is healing and settling in so to speak. Basically, it not "online" yet. During this phase some folks actually gain weight or lose very little. So, don't let it get you too down, you'll be missing that short-lived freedom to eat decent portions soon enough. :P As for the support group, they are good for some folks and not for others. I think if it appeals to you... go for it! Work it, sister! Some people learn more about themselves from such groups... in this instance, the group has a common history (lap-band and weight issues) and there may be some cool insights and pointers for you... Work every tool at your disposal, band, diet, support group, this forum, etc.

As for the ticker....once you pick the one ya want and get it all set up...copy the html text (you know, click and drag and do a control-c and paste it like normal, control-v) it tells you into your signature box (which means you have to open up the usercp page from the lapbandtalk menu... and then click on edit signature...)

Good luck with the ticker!

Tina

Hi everyone!

Shelbi~ (is your name Shelbi?!!)

You will ALL love this

So, last night I am meeting with a client in her house. We get inside and I keep hearing this beeping...she's ignoring it, and something keeps beeping. Finally, it was driving me crazy, because I was trying to not look all over, and I was pretty sure I wasn't hearing things! So, I asked her if she needed to check her voicemails or a text or something. She said..nah, we're fine, it's just my dog's shock collar, only it beeps instead of shocks him. I almost choked on my own spit, but trying to be professional, just kind of nodded my head. She took it off of him and kind of dropped on the table so it would stop beeping.

#1 I was internally freaking out because I had decided the band was a flipping shock collar and the timing couldn't have been better!

#2 I had never even heard the dog bark. I got to thinking that if my shock collar beeped EVERY time I thought of eating, or daydreamed about french bread and butter that people would be looking all over for the backing up delivery truck! Could you imagine a BEEPING lapband!! OMG

#3 I sweartogod that for a nanosecond (I am not kidding here!), just like in the movies when someone is doing something, and the other person literally sees something else....that I pictured a lapband, port and all, on her table!!!!!

I was DYING inside

;)

Taynuh

LOVED the description of the origin of your nickname. I was cracking myself up, saying it outloud at my computer, in my version of a southern drawl!!! I didn't do too bad!

Any news on when your baby boy will arrive??

NICNAK

Hello! How have you been feeling? When are you going in for your first fill? I didnt have enough fun last time, so I am going back for more on Friday!

Rosey

Totally agree with Tina on the band...at that stage of the game, I wondered if I even had a band in there! After pre and post op, I felt like a pig cuz I could eat anything...! Don't let it alarm you, the swelling is going on around the band, and there isn't enough of a squeeze at this point for much restriction. I just tried to stay away from the junk, eat when I was hungry, and watch my portions, but not obsess about them. you WILL see a HUGE difference after your fill. I blew off the teeny bites, not drinking with meals, and chewing down to applesauce because I didn't need to...well....it was harder work to change after my fill...Each time I didn't do it right, my band let out a flippin jolt like a dog's shock collar! So, you might want to be more intelligent than I was, and practice the small bites now!

I am envious that you are close enough to go to the support group! Do report back and tell us what it was like. Tina...have you ever been to one?

the next book I write on here, I will try and tell ya about me!

hugs to all!

Hello everyone,

It's great to meet such a wonderful group. If you read my past posts, you will know that I have had a horrible experience with my local hospital (which I also work at sadly enough). Well, that was enough to make me decide I'm not going to give a dime to them. So, I started researching Dr.K and tentatively have my surgery scheduled for December 5th. My huge thing is I can't afford to fly my hubby out with me, so I was wondering if there is anyone local who can help with with tips for transportation, lodging, where to get prescriptions filled, etc. If anyone is kind enough to do this, please PM me. I look forward to meeting you all, you seem like such a fun group! ;)

Hey want2be:

Can't wait for next week's fill, I'm so flip flop. One day can't eat anything, the next I'm starving and can eat everything. I found the GREATEST Protein Bar ever....it's just like a kitkat bar with 15 grams of Protein. Fabulous!

Munchkin -- I'm not local, but wanted to chime in on some accomodations info -- ask Marilyn or Mary or Denise at Dr. K's office if you'll be having your surgery at Health South Hospital in Aurora, CO (across from Dr. K's office) or at Parker Adventist Hospital in Parker, CO. Dr. K is on staff at both facilities and does the band at both. There's about a 30 minute drive between the 2 facilities, so that might make a difference in your choice of hotels. If you get the Parker facility ( from one nurse to another ---it is WONDERFUL!) try the Holiday Inn Select which is right across from the hospital and gives a medical discount if you tell them your having surgery at Parker Adventisit -- it was $89 for me in September. -- If you don't plan on renting a car, there's a car service that some folks have used which Marilyn can tell you the name of, too. There is a restaurant in the hotel and several within walking distance. The closest pharmacy I could find was Walgreen's two exits up, but they honored my prescription card and I paid my regular co-pay. I was able to get my Dulcolax suppository (yippee!) and some Gatorade and Jello there for post op. Hope that helps.

I want to know what the Kit Kat Protein bar is too! 'fess up!:hungry:

Hi Munchkin...... You may try getting ahold of Marilyn in Dr K's office and she can give you all of the information on lodging, etc... I would also ask her about a shuttle to get you to Dr K's office for your pre-op visit and possibly to the hospital....

Are you sure that your husband won't be able to come with you?? I know some people have had the surgery without the help of a spouse or friend, but it is always better to have someone with you while you are recovering from the surgery and on pain medication... Just from my own experience, my husband was a big, big help...

I think you made the right choice to have Dr K do your band surgery... He is a great Dr and the girls in his office are wonderful... I had the best treatmment at the Crown Point surgery Center in Parker, they are with you all the way....

Hopefully someone on this board can be more helpful to you on your lodging and transportation than I was...

Good luck to you and welcome to Bandland....

The new girl who works in Dr. K's office is named Natalie, she is the Bariatric Coordinator and has only been with him a couple of months. She can will talk to you about the surgery, hotels, prescriptions and any other information you need. She will spend as much time as you would like to go over everything.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
